Pretoria WUG

Groete,

Ludo

laubscherc - afstand is nie n groot probleem nie, daar link ouens uit Kempton Park uit na Rietvallei toe (met standard kit) - so as jy mooi line of sight het na n highsite toe is jy sorted.

It has been said over a hundred times, but I still need to say that you guys are doing an amazing job. Hope to get Harties connected to the PTAWug soon. ;)

ja...what can i say :)

hey there!

well, my body corporate finally aproved the arial etc to be placed at my house, next weekend seems like a good time to plot, upload, etc... will please require some help from you guys!

(this weekend is bulls game, i'll fall of the roof!

I just want to clarify something (not aimed at anyone in this thread, but in general). People are connecting to wugs expecting some kind of service where they can sit back and just demand that everything must be working, not wanting to contribute from their side as well.
This is NOT how ANY wug works.

For example, if the highsite you connect to goes down, it's your responsibility to get it up again, or install backup power. Or just get on your roof, turn your antenna and connect to another highsite, that's if you REALLY need your daily wug fix. Or look for and put up an alternative site. Or put up a mesh link from you to a user that connects to a different highsite to provide redundancy. Or have actually helped on the site where you connect, so you have the owner's cell number and can call him to find out what's happening.

Every effort is made to keep all highsites up 24/7, but Eskom are bliksems. At some important sites we have installed backup power, but at Rietvallei a WISP sharing the tower with us decided to plug his kit on our batteries, screwing up a R3500 charger and causing a day of downtime and lots of driving around for bashTux. The guy from the wisp refuses to pay, but that's a story for another day.

WUG's are not services run by elite admin teams so the masses can use it. It's by EVERYONE for EVERYONE. I'm not saying everyone must trek up mountains with wifi gear and put up towers, but rather that everyone must have the spirit and animus to help the wug.
For example: There are okes that will anytime fetch some kit from the suppliers in Midrand where they pass through from work.
Others will sponsor some equipment for new highsites, as they don't have the time or technical know-how to install it on the site. Others don't have the money to sponsor kit, but they then help to install the kit on the sites. Some okes only sit on IRC and help new users with their questions.
Each person has something (physically or a skill/talent) they can contribute to the wug.

WUG = Wireless USERS GROUP, if it was some kind of commercial network with set service levels etc. it would have just been PTAWN - Pretoria Wireless Network. I'm not saying you are not allowed to mention that things are not working lekker or is broken, no problem. But people that demand that things should be working but are unwilling to put their weight behind it to get the problem sorted, should rather not connect. The wug users are the people that keep everything running, put up highsites, do routing, assign IP's, run network services, find new highsites, help new users etc. No-one gets paid to do any of this.

Thus, if you are wanting to join a permanently, fast, realiable 99.9% uptime network where you want to demand service levels and not do anything from your side to help the network. Don't join a wug.
