Pretoria WUG

I can’t agree more with the statements made by protz.
The WUGS in SA are starting to grow to a point that more and more ppl need to join for the passion for Wifi and making it bigger and better.
Sitting around moaning and bitching is not going to help anything, rather get up and solve the problem.

Personally I’ll prefer 50 ppl on a WUG that has the thinking of we need to make it work, than 100 ppl thinking the other 50 will sort it out, the WUG needs to work for me.

It is a community based project that is alive, without feeding it with maintenance, new ideas, hard work etc. It will have its problems.

I agree totally with ProtzKroG: The WUG's model resembles the origin of the Internet much more than today's modern telecom infrastructure. It's a set of networks interconnected with as much redundancy as possible, decentralised as much as possible and steered by a committee of volunteers.

That is not to say that it's the "perfect" setup, it's just one that *works*. When considering a system as large as the WUG, the number of factors are MUCH more than just dB and ping time. The current system of governance seems to be working well, and I don't think there's any motivation to change.

So next time your ping time is crap, or your signal goes down, or your throughput is really, really bad, spare a thought for the poor idiots who have no life but those they dedicate to keep the bits flowing on the airwaves! Or, even better, skill yourself up and dig in!

Indeed, and do NOT join IRC after a three week absence, and begin by stating "Hi Guys, is the Piet Pompies highsite down?"

Happy New Member!!

Hi guys, last week I read up on the WUG service and found it very interesting. I then logged on IRC to talk to some of the existing members. All the guys were extremely helpful in giving me all the info and help that I needed. They seemed like great group of guys. Well 2 days later I ordered my WUG kit from Miro (delivered to my doorstep the next day) Anyways I started to set up my Kit. It looked like allot of work but it was really easy and a moerse lot of fun. When everything was setup I got on my roof installed the antenna and logged on IRC again to finish my setup. Once again the guys were helpful. Minutes later I was up and running. My experience so far is that the WUG isn’t just a place where you get free services but a place where you meet some friends as swell. So my opinion on the WUG...
GET IT NOW!! It a fun experience, here is plenty free services and it’s a place where you can talk and ask for help for almost everything.

Awesome!!

Glad to hear you experienced the people as friendly! Because they are. (But sometimes IRC can be cruel!!)

If you follow the getting started guide on www.ptawug.co.za carefully, it is really VERY easy.
