Hey guys, I need some help and some things cleared up, I'm planning to get wifi at home from telkom, I know the price is R229 or somewhere around there, I was wonder about the "line rental" price, I have a landline from telkom and already paying a line rental, is the internet line rental same as this landline rental? And is there anyother fee that I am missing that I should know about? And what are some cheap routers, pretty sure I need those too

Hello. Add about R159 for the adsl line rental which is separate from the voice line rental

ADSL / DSL information.

I spent bleeding ages compiling all this info! :D

Firstly, check whether ADSL/DSL (means the same thing) is available in your area via this link :
http://www2.telkom.co.za/checkadsl/

If after putting your landline # into the block, it advises it's available along with speed (eg."Maximum speed available in your area 20Mbps(Copper)"), decide on the speed you're willing to pay for. Currently, 2.00 - 2.5Mbps (the slowest, but described by Telkom as "Fast"!) is R165 incl. VAT. They, and others, do offer a 1Mbps speed, but it's not listed on the "Plan" pg. below (far as I saw) - suggest you take at least the 2Mbps one.

Click on the various dots to scroll for other speeds / pricing here:
https://secure.telkom.co.za/today/shop/home/plan/fast-adsl/

https://secure.telkom.co.za/today/shop/plan/adsl-line/

Take note of these fees they list, but shouldn't affect you :
DSL Installation fee of R792 not included (self installation option available)
Line installation fee of R620 not included

You can do the setup yourself to waive that R792 fee (they should even help you troubleshoot the setup, over the phone, once your ADSL line is ready) ; pretty sure the R620 fee is for a new VOICE line, not a charge for the ADSL, but double check with them when you phone (nos. below), or someone else can answer here.

10213 - for Sales
10210 - for Service
Free from your Telkom Landline

Decide on an internet service provider - you can order/include data from Telkom at the same time as placing your order for the ADSL line (I cannot access those pages on the internet currently, but they are/were called "Do Plans") ; or start off with a free 1GB test account :

http://www.afrihost.com/microsites/freegb/

https://www.axxess.co.za/adsl?stid=10010001&act=now (think you need to provide them with C/card details, unlike their sister-Co, Afrihost).

Web Africa, MWeb, Gridhost also have 1GB/month test accounts ; they should all be no obligation to purchase more data each month. Stay away from Vox for the time-being .. significant issues recently, and they're not providing meaningful feedback like they used to : http://mybroadband.co.za/vb/showthread.php/629191-Vox-Telecom-Fatpipe/page449

Rather order/keep your ADSL line with Telkom ; don't elect to save a few Rand by moving it to an independent ISP, as it can be a hassle to switch to a different ISP later on. With Telkom, you can use multiple ISPs at the same time, if modem set to bridge / half-bridge mode.

You could get a modem from a Telkom shop or get one free if you take out a 24-month contract, but I'd rather get one independently, from here (TP-Link resellers) :

http://www.dbg.co.za/index.php?cPath=55_57_159_163

Have bought a TP-Link router from them before, service & delivery times were fast, and as a MyBroadband member, you should still be able to get 10% discount off your order - check that with them, when you phone. Pricing is excl. VAT & courier charges.

This one ..
.. at R409 + Vat + delivery fee should be good enough if it's for ADSL/DSL & a line up to 24Mbps.

Thank you I O U !!! You've really helped, gave me way more info then what the peps at telkom did!

Great stuff ; glad it helped.

A few more things to be aware of ... firstly, some very useful info. in this thread :
http://mybroadband.co.za/vb/showthr...account-other-than-Telkom-guest-account-works

http://apps.telkom.co.za/ADSLVERIFY_NEW/verifyRequest.do
The ADSL Verify is for customers who have selected the ADSL modem self install option.
Once you have completed the modem installation process, submit the form below and your ADSL account will be activated and operational. Should you require assistance, free access to the Telkom helpdesk is available.

If you would prefer a Telkom technician to complete the installation for you, this option is also available at a call out fee. Please contact us on (10210) for any of these options.

Again, there shouldn't be a need to get a Telkom tech. to do the installation - waste of good money, and you just work through the issues, if there are any, as they arise with Telkom by phone, or on the forum.

http://mybroadband.co.za/vb/showthread.php/510812-Telkom-Guest-Account

.. more (found elsewhere) on Telkom Guest Account : "It's the default account that only allows you to surf the Telkom site. It's the default when you set up your adsl the first time."

Regarding TP-Link : they can also help setup the modem/router if you buy one of theirs, even from that DBG website ; one of their techs. in PTA helped me out once with half-bridge settings to do with their router, paired with a D-Link modem (both are still running well, after about 3 - 5 years ; modem about 5, TP-Link router, about 3) : http://www.tp-link.co.za/contact.html

That certainly used to happen in the 'old days' (early days of the internet) when you needed to connect to the internet using a dial-up modem. There shouldn't be a reason for it to happen now using a more modern modem/router.

However, the line might also drop these days due to lack of filters, and interference from alarm systems connected to the phone line.

Have a look at this, if you have problems, once you get setup:
http://mybroadband.co.za/vb/showthr...icro-Filter-Help-with-ADSL-Line-Configuration

Ensure you get a POTS filter (Telkom F100 ADSL Filter, as labelled on the filter itself) for every phone you have in your house / flat - you just plug the filter into the phone cable, and then the telephone instrument into one of the slots).

A relevant cable will need to be plugged into your PC/laptop, and similar one from PC/laptop into the 2nd slot of the POTS filter, closest to where your ADSL modem/router is - I may be wrong on that, because mine comes from a 4-in-1 copy/fax etc. machine, instead.

http://vanilla.co.za/adsl_self_install.php
You will require the necessary hardware to make use of your line, apart from a modem/router the most important of which will be a POTS filter. This simple device filters certain “noise” from interfering on your ADSL line caused by your phone and vice versa. Without this device you will usually have to forfeit your ability to make normal phone calls and make use of the Internet freely and simultaneously without any interference.

You will require a POTS filter to be connected to each phone jack with a phone present on the same physical line your ADSL modem/router connects to. They are usually in the sub R50 price range and are available at Telkom Direct shops and possibly other electronics related stores.

Also look at modems/routers from Hi-Fi Corp, Incredible Connection & Game. I've seen a D-Link wireless for about R600 advertised in one of those stores weekly supplements, every now & then over the last 6 months.

Ensure you change the password (and username if the modem/router allows for it - some don't) as soon as you've set things up & note them down somewhere safe. This, and setting up the thing for the 1st time, will need to be done by putting in "192.168.1.1" into the search bar of a web-browser ; I find Internet Explorer works best for this.

The settings will be much the same for any ADSL modem/router, as described in this link:
http://vanilla.co.za/setup_adsl_tplink_w8901g.php

EDIT :
http://www.hificorp.co.za/tp-link-300mbps-3g-wireless-n-router-tl-mr3420
R800 for ADSL modem/router with 3G capability

http://www.hificorp.co.za/tp-link-150mbps-portable-3g-wireless-n-router-tl-3020
R500 - should also be fine for using ADSL/3G, but would rather get that one from DBG website at around R400 ; if you live in JHB/CPT you can collect and do away with the courier fee.
