Price reduction promise

Thats our problem , we dont want to make sacrifices , yes , i dont expect doctors etc to switch their phones off , just think of the days when we never had cellphones .how did we manage then .
Time is money. Should i not be available the company could loose thousands, for some ppl, that may even be millions. the fact is that it is no longer a question of standing together to accomplish a goal, it is that money talks. no matter how expensive telecomunications is, we have to pay for it and use it as it means we make money and money is what the world is all about.

I wonder how much money telkom would lose if you could convince the whole of SA not to use landlines for a day?

If MTN would offer us 27c/mb then I'd double my data usage. I win, they win...Just need to get a reliable 3G signal at home now.

I must say I really hate all the "bundle" crap. I just want to use the internet via MTN when I need to. It's not often. Just when I go on holidays or business trips. Buying bundles is a total waste of time. Besides, I don't know how much data I'm going to use until I'm using it.

I just want to pay a reasonable rate for data used as and when I want to use it. And R2 per megabyte is criminal.

So work on all the fancy bundles if you must, but provide a workable, honest solution for casual usage too. Because right now I'm on the verge of jumping ship.

Go to Virgin Mobile,they charge 50c/mg anytime, NO BUNDLES.Whats this 27c/mg I read about?:D

I am now using Virgin mobile for data purposes. I have completely removed myself from MTN for that purpose and I find that the connection stability is becoming less of an issue. As soon as MTN decreases its prices and increase its focus on the SA citizens, I'll start using them again for data usage.

@ 3gee:

I agree with you, we allowed this. But remember, a boycot is only possible if we have an alternative. Telecoms has become a neccesity. Just like any other type of IT.

I know what you're saying here, but 3Gee was also asking what happened when there weren't any cellphones. No one lost any business then and neither should they now. If a person loses business because of not being available it's probably because they make it a habit to be available. We are turning a convenience into an inconvenience and we have nobody to blame but ourselves for becoming dependant on the networks.

The bundles themselves aren't so bad. It's the expiry date I have a problem with. It should be the same as with airtime where you have an unlimited time to use it as long as you use it occasionally. Don't you mean that you are on the Virgin of jumping ship? :D

Cube: I think a boycot is very possible even if you don't have an alternative.

I tend to agree with you on this one Prometheus. I don't know how so many people claiming to be business 'people' can put themselves in a position where they are dependent on one service as a means of staying in 'contact'. We all know from many years on this planet called Earth, that nothing, and mean nothing can be guaranteed to work 100% all the time.

When running a business, which may be your only real income, would you let one thing stand between you and its failure? I most certainly would not. That's why we have things called backup's. Get a prepaid sim from each service provider and two extra cellphones that can keep you in contact should you have a failure on your main connection. So stop blaiming the networks for your own mistakes. (Yes, I know that we should be getting near 100% uptime. But I'm sure problems will become less and less in the future).

So look at what you're doing wrong in your 'business' and again don't be a fool in expecting some brilliant 100% uptime service just because you paid for it. Rather spend a extra few pennies now on your backups, then loosing 'millions' later.

I'm not running a business but I have two 2 3G data cards, a GPRS cellphone and 9 sim cards in total from the 3 main networks. I therefore feel that I have reasonable chance of being always' connected.;)

UnDeR±tAkEr: I'm not sure if you understand exactly what my comments were about or not. While I agree on your points that putting your faith in a single solution is asking for trouble and dare I say maybe even a guarantee for possible bankruptcy somewhere along the line, we were talking about actually boycotting all the networks.

I know that a complete blanket approach would be impossible as it's natural and not unfair for people to think about their business first. I do however think that a boycot is very feasible. Even if you have to use your phone as the primary means to stay in contact you certainly don't need to make it a habit to chat on it all day as a lot of 'business' people do. With some careful planning you can do most of your business without using a phone or by using it more efficiently. And don't forget where most of those fat profits come from. The last update was that 82% of Vodacom's customer base consisted of prepaid users and not business users.

The real problem is to get 18million+ people to stop chatting to their friends and umm... girlfriends. This includes prepaid and contract customers who are not using their phones for business needs and are only pumping more cash into the pockets of Vodacom/MTN/et al. Human nature however doesn't allow for everyone to stand together like that and the system will be broken on the first day and will quickly fall apart making the networks very happy that the cash cows are back to normal usage conditions.

Well, what more can I really say. Nothing I guess. South Africans wait and pray for change to happen but are too lame to do anything to bring it about. Better to leave this thread to its original purpose which was 'hoping' for a price reduction even though the customer is the one with the real power. Resistance is futile and soon I might be assimilated by the masses so... bye bye.

Prometheus, I do agree, but there is a difference between a boycot being possible and being feasible. Of course it would be feasible. But think of the sheer magnitude of the capabilities the organiser of such a massive undertaking must have for it to work. If the goverment can't even get the majority of the country to go and vote, how can you as a single entity (or even an internet forum community) influence millions do something that seems far less important by comparison?

For it to work you need to prove that it will improve every individuals' life in the short, mid- and long term. We all know it, but can you prove it to the guy sitting in the shack with his Nokia 5110? Or to the business exec that has his cell account paid by the company, or the kids/teens/adults that live on MXIT or MIG33? We have been forced to find ways of dealing with any given problem; By simply ignoring it or finding alternatives. That's our culture. Why do you think AIDS is such a pandemic?

You're right though, it's our own fault. But we know no better.

MTNDD, any news, estimates, projections on when we can expect this?

Good day,

Gimli

Unfortunately not, but I promise as soon as I have any news what so ever you guys will be the first to know

Thanks MTNDD

Lets just go back in time and establish the basis of this thread. Are we in fact waiting for an announcement about revised data bundel rates?

In other words: ICASA still has to say something? Imminently™

Well with new bundles and new tariffs there has to be an ICASA lodging and all the BU'S need to agree...........

I think things are at the final stages but as mentioned will advise as soon as I know...........

Thanks

MTNDD

Well cant be soon enough... i need low priced data, as do everyone... our companies work very hard just to pay our data bills..

i bet the reason for not dropping data rates, or one of the reasons, ias that high end customers who already signed a R500/month contract for data is gonna be mighty peed off if rates gets reduced now!!

@MTNDD
It is now nearly 3 months since you suggested that the rates will be changed. Come on, give us some more info, I dare you, I know you can. Just do it man.

Why don't you use MTN for voice calls and Virgin Mobile for Data, you can't go
wrong that way. If MTN can't help you, do the next best thing, change SP.
I use MTN for voice (with MTN for 8 years now) and Virgin Moblie for 2 days.
I don't have a problem with MTN services, but money talks.
