I agree. Being able to watch 5 seasons of something I actually want to watch in one weekend with no ads is pure bliss.

The more local content an operator has the less attractive it is to me. If local content was actually worth watching it'd be a different story.
 
500000 subsribers? R26.40 (about) increase per customer?

13 million rand extra per month until they get this 'competition'? we all know it wont be this year that anybody can even think of 'stealling customers' from dstv... nobody is gonna switch off their dstv over R26 and 'wait for new people'... they will just think 'i'll pay it till there is something else to go to' then 12 months later, 156 Million in dstv's pocket... how can anyone say they are stupid for increasing there prices?
 
MC finding more ways to not get customers :D Lovely.

I gave up fighting with them for video on demand and users being able to "construct" a bouquet of channels for a price per channel. Beh.
 
You can't knock a company for raising its price by less than the rate of inflation. Everything goes up, including salaries etc.
We raised ours by 7%, it's unavoidable, really.
Having said that, given my financial postition, i will probably drop my subscription, or go for one of their skinnier offerings.
I imagine their are quite a lot of people in SA tightening the purse strings right about now.

If you say so.

You need to understand that broadcast subscriptions are different to other products.

If you manufacture a product, you have raw materials and a total input cost per product. Say your cost is R2, you sell for R5. If you costs go up by 6% you can maybe increase your selling price by 5 or 6 %.

But with subscription based services, you don't use a cost per user model.

I don't have time to explain to you the whole thing but Multichoice don't have a right to increase the price of the service. They do so, simply because they can.

Why has the price of DSTV compact and select stayed the same?

Don't give them a reason to justify their increase by posting junk
 
As long as multichoice and SuperSport hold exclusivity agreements for live coverage of F1, Cricket, Golf, Football and of course Rugby, people will pay whatever they charge. True competition will only come about when the competitors get access to live sport coverage, until then, the 'competition' is simply fighting for the crumbs.

the reason for this i believe is they get recorded then get put into the file format, so how can u get hd from a recording?

as far as i am aware there is no recorder that capture's hd quality

Well, I assume MC pay for their international programming in USD/EUR. The Rand has weakened by about 30% in the last few months - this is essentially an increase in their 'raw materials' cost. I don't think the price increase is unreasonable, but it will be interesting to see what competition brings.
 
They are not different to other products. Whether it's a service or a product you offer, your costs will go up each year, not necessarily the product or service you provide, but the cost of running your company certainly will. If you wish to retain your staff, you have to increase their salaries. Essential services you use, will go up. It's normal to raise prices to absorb these increases. What about the cost of series/movies/sport/news. You think those remain the same each year?
Of course, if you're not interested in making a profit you can always ignore my 'junk'.
 
rather complain about other things that go up a lot more, most people get more than the 6% increase per year, so effectively ur Dstv costs u less now, at least you get something for your subscription, have u looked at your insurance premiums on your car?? moan about things that is insanely expensive, not 'going up R30'... 30 u drink out before the sun sets tonight...

As much as we hate this behavior, it is brilliant pricing by Multichoice. It is as if they are saying, "we know we are getting competition, but our value is worth it."

The only way the other companies can offer a better proposition now is to stick in a load of cash for premium programs and then offer it to market at a discount. And at larger volume too.

I believe DSTV is bluffing a little and underestimate the risk to their higher LSM user base. That is where they can lose out big time! I however think they are safe as the picture I am getting is that the new entrants made a silent promise not to compete with each other. They are rather going to offer products to different market segments.

Not good news for us consumers, but clever none the less.

They're possibly increasing the price now, before competition arrives, exactly because of the fact that competition is on the way. They'll use that money to secure more exclusive broadcast deals (sport anyway), so that the competition has nothing that will make the sport junkies switch.

They could always drop the prices a bit, at a later stage. If the competition doesn't arrive with a bang and decent content, it will just cement MonoChoice's position.
