Pricey picture

The more MC charge, the more the competition can charge. Hell, they probably colluded with MC on this :p

In anyevent, I think MC still basically have the monopoly on sport, which I think is one of the biggest draws to DSTV, so they can pretty much charge what they want IMO.

The way things are going, the only way that MC will keep it's subscribers is if they open a branch in Oz.

downloaded content is sometimes of poorer quality

I beg to differ, unless you go for cam jobs, but most of the series are HD, which makes awesome viewing on a HD tv.

South Africans increasingly share portable hard drives packed full of the latest US and British TV shows — downloaded, advertising-free content which hasn’t been aired here yet. It’s not legal
hey i've been doing this for a long time now:D i hardly watch dstv.....maybe a bit of anime and discovery over the weekends

Ironically, though, the biggest competitor to DStv may not even come from traditional operators. South Africans increasingly share portable hard drives packed full of the latest US and British TV shows — downloaded, advertising-free content which hasn’t been aired here yet. It’s not legal, of course, but the practice is widespread and isn’t going to stop.
The joy of watching a series without being forced by DSTV to watch DSTV adverts where DSTV advertise themselves on the very same service from DSTV that you already are paying DSTV for is addictive.

DSTV decided that we are not allowed digital access to their oh so holy program schedule, so we moved on. This is their fault. All we wanted to do was have the ability to be able to use a TIVO type machine to record the programs we want to watch without being forced to buy their DSTV branded and inflexible hardware.

I stopped paying the DSTV peoples when they advertised the program I was watching while I was watching it.

I don't see why I must pay an advanced advert dispenser, so I canceled and have so far saved R12000 ... and am no longer suffering from advert induced stress.

Poor DSTV .. suffering from self induced market stress .. without ANY competition. BWAAAHAHAHAHAHA ... i feel so sorry for them. No really. Bwaaahahahahahahaha.

The problem is does the majority of DSTV subs think like we do and will cancel or will the super rich just toss the increase paper in the bin. Also us forumites are thinking this way and sharing our views on DSTV, but the whole of SA is not hooked onto myadsl?

Downloaded HD content isn't really HD. It may be better than normal TV, but it isn't even DVD quality. It's not HD.

Often it depends on the version you download.

Anyway - while the 350mb versions are not high res they're often better than what monochoice offers and they're in the correct aspect ratio.

Yes, most of the series are HD, hence in the title of the episode you will see ".hdtv". They are all captured from 720p or higher sources and then scaled down to 350mb versions.

More local content? Sorry but the only local content I have any intention of watching ever is News, Carte Blanche and Sport.

When I had DSTV I only watched four chanels... the rest was all crap... If I get DSTV again I will probably only watch the same four chanels again, well 5 with Animax but that's easy I just need a fast enough DSL line for This and all the other good stuff! :D

Othwerwise Since DSTV is the "only" Pay for TV channel they can do what they want much like Telkom is...

wrong the 300mb versions are not better than dstv

the 700 meg versions are also not HD

i downloaded plenty hd movies which are sometimes like 12gb

the series quality is not even close to hd or dvd for that matter no matter what version

the reason for this i believe is they get recorded then get put into the file format, so how can u get hd from a recording?

as far as i am aware there is no recorder that capture's hd quality

stand to be corrected though

I guess thats a matter of opinion - I get plenty more pixelation on my dstv as compared to the 350mb format. That the aspect ratio is also correct for my plasma also makes it superior simply because there is no stretching.

you record the readily available HD broadcast?

as far as i am aware there is no recorder that capture's hd quality
Including capture cards?

Who is the new competition everyone is talking bout? When will they launch and what offers do they have?

I want video on demand. If I want to watch a movie I want to be able to search for it and then press the play button. Boom! No searching around an arb guide to find out that it is at 3 in the morning. Then I forget to tape it and then have to wait a week for it to be shown again so that I can forget to tape it again! Just let me watch what I want when I want. I am willing to pay for this.

I reckon that besides cost this is one of the major reasons that piracy is taking off. If you pirate the movies you can watch them when you want how you want...

I'm like you but I also give the news and Carte Blanche a miss. For my news there are the internet.

Interesting enough, this is one of the reasons I have not subscribed to DSTV yet. I hate the idea of paying for all those sports channels I will never watch. I actually just want the National Geographic, Discovery, History, Movie and Anime channels.
