Fail. Obviously without the royal family they'd have some form of elected leadership. BTW a dictatorship is also a more focused and simpler than parliament but it doesn't make it rignt. How many people on the street can name more than 4 Grimaldi family members? How many can name more than four Windsors? Face it when it comes to Monaco people care more about F1, super yachts, half naked women, gambling, Ferarris and the jet-set lifestyle. Albert can take a toffee as far as most people are concerned

Um, just because you don't know the names of more then four members of the royal family of Monaco does not mean that Monacoan's don't. And quite frankly I'd rather have one family ruling then an army of corrupt politicians (read ANC). Think about it, one family taking a mill or two off the top is bad, 500 people taking a mill or two off the top leads to a bankrupt country.

Kate is at least attractive, but it would appear old William is turning to look out exactly like his father.

I just hope William has the clarity of mind not to let her drive in a black mercedes through tunnels in France.

And posters get upset with ME for posting 'nonsense'?!!!

What purpose does this family serve in England?

This family does not 'rule'. That is done by the British government.

I like the fact that she is older than him :)

Who said I didn't? That was to illustrate that the majority of people do not care about their royal family and as such Monaco would continue to prosper without them. If you'd rather have a leader that is in charge because he was born into a certain family and instead of a leader who earns it that's your business. I on the other hand refuse to follow anyone blindly and do not like anyone having absolute power. Democracy > Monarchy, Maybe not the SA democratic government but democratic governments in general. BTW people from Monaco are called Monégasques/Monacan not Monacoan

Fail

William gave Diana's sapphire-and-diamond engagement ring to his fiancee when he popped the question during a vacation in Kenya last month, he said.

What, he gave her a second hand ring!? ;) :p
Ah well, at least it's in keeping with the second hand step mother in law that she'll be getting

LOL. I said I'd rather have one ruling family instead of the ANC, not that it's my preferred government. I'd rather have a gorilla instead of the ANC. And I'd like to know how you know that the majority of the people of Monaco don't know there royal family? Did you do a poll or something? Monaco may have a Draconian government system but most of the people are not complaining, so what's the problem. It is obviously working. Democracy in SA is going really well, we have a corrupt, sex mad, moron for president and the leader of our youth is an ignorant, racist, sexist, Stalin wannabe. And don't forget the pocket lining that seems to be SA politicians favourite pass time. Yeah, who would want to live in a country with less bureaucracy, more service delivery, no tax, very little unemployment, etc.

BTW, I really don't care what people from Monaco are called.

Big Whoop.

Congratz to the guy and all that but no more than any other person getting married.

I never said that the majority of Monaco don't know their royal family. I said that the majority of people in general a.k.a. the global population, don't care about another country's/principality's monarchy, the poll results on this thread back up that statement. I never said the government we have is great, far from it in fact, merely that I support democracy in general.

The problem is that everyone is at Alberts mercy, luckily for them he's an upstanding fellow. There's nothing stopping him from becoming a tyrant overnight and doing whatever he bloody well wants at the expense of the citizens, that's the problem.

The only reason that Monaco can get away with this is because it is inhabited by rich foreigners who don't need help from government anyway. Many Monaco natives have been forced out of the area to France because of skyrocketing property prices and commute to Monaco to work. Anyway let's face it Monaco is the size of a small town, how much beaurocracy could there possibly be anyway? You can't compare that to an average sized country. There would still be less beaurocracy even if they had a president.

BTW, I really don't care what people from Monaco are called.

Why would you choose to remain ignorant and keep making a fool of yourself talking about "monacoans" if the subject ever came up in general conversation?

Yip, I support democracy over any other form of government as well. Anyway I think we are starting to go way off topic.

I'd still rather live in Monaco then under an ANC government.:D

And I don't care what a Monacan is called because I'm not anally retentive.;) (notice i got it right this time:p)

What purpose does this family serve in England?

They entertain us and provide public holidays.

The favourite is Prince Phillip. He says the most un-PC things around women and 3rd world leaders
