Pro ADSL line advice needed. Telkom can't resolve problem

I can't believe it! Argh!

So I phone Mweb for the millionth time to see what the hell is happening.

No sir, we are still awaiting on Telkom.

So I decide, screw this and I phone Telkom directly. Had to hold 40 damn minutes only to find out that someone closed the damn case. I mean I've had this problem for 2.5 months now. Stop closing the f**king cases if the problem is not resolved for heavens sake.

I'm getting this feeling this issue is never going to be resolved.

you can report online and escalate via TelkomZA without phoning

Just to be clear on the filters. Every line that connects to a telephone on the property runs through POTS filters and the line that goes to the router does not have a filter on it right? The POTS filters are there for exactly what you are describing - the dropping of the DSL when calls are received and most of all - the Noises on the line.

the adsl goes straight into the jack and the phone goes through a pots filter into the jack.

Lol the line was off the whole morning but as soon as Telkom calls the landline, the maid had to answer and it fixed itself :p.

I told Telkom to rather call my cellphone but they always call the landline lol.

No you're misunderstanding. This is an extension installed by Telkom. Lots of people have this. 2 points at different locations even though it's the same line. There is no ADSL in the house. Only a telephone.

This all worked fine for years.

install a pots filter at the house. Also run your tests again after ensuring that nothing is plugged in at the house, phone, fax, alarm etc.

Mine was also off the whole morning until a call came through.

This is so weird.

Can't recall whether you sent me a PM to investigate?

No, I've never PM'd you before.

Ok so I've figured out the very interesting, and very annoying pattern with my connection.

The above screen-shots were taken on different times of day. The times and ADSL performance at those times are still completely random and intermittent.

However I completely determine the status of my line by simply looking at the "Max Rate Downsteam" section on the router stats.

It's basically works like this.

Max Rate 0 - 1999:

- Line will be slow and pretty much unusable.
- Telephone calls either made or received, will not disconnect the line.
- A feint ADSL white noise type sound can be heard when picking up the telephone.
- Online performance extremely unstable.

Max Rate 2000 - 4999:

- Telephone calls either made or received, will disconnect the line completely.
- After disconnection the line will try to reconnect 10 seconds afterwards until another call is made or received.
- A loud ADSL white noise type sound can be heard on the phone line.
- If on the handset while ADSL is connecting, a 56k type modem sound will be heard.
- Gif images online will take forever to load.
- Online gaming will not work and will cause strange behaviour.

Max Rate 5000 - 6000+:

- Telephone calls do not affect the line.
- Online gaming works 100%
- Gif images load 100%
- Youtube and speeds are perfect.

Apparently a specialist is investigating my case so awaiting to see what happens, got a phone call earlier today and told them the whole story :D

Mine was also off the whole morning until a call came through.

Yep least we know it isn't our fault as we both have same problems so can't be our devices.

Oh Good, They followed up on my request. Let me know how it goes.

I will thanks again, I also asked my neighbour today and funnily enough they had the same problem with the noise and everything, but they don't have adsl and just the phone line in their house.

The symptoms of theirs are exactly like mine so must be something somewhere at fault.

91.56% sure that whatever resolves your issue ....is going to resolve mine. However I'm 4 technicians and 2 specialists later and still waiting for a fix though. So in all honesty ...good luck man.

will post here as soon as I get a solution to the problem and will hopefully help others who get in the same situation

your issue was that your SNR kept varying, so ASSIA kept increasing and decreasing the sync speed.

Either, There is a piece of exposed wire somewhere OR your port needs changing.

Also... not to be 'that' pessimistic guy, but since I have 2.5 months and counting, I can tell you this:

Whatever the techie does.... does indeed usually resolve the problem but only for 2-3 days.

Changed my DSLAM - Resolved for 2 days only
Changed my Analogue Port - Resolved for 3 days only
Physically replaced my line outside (at my own cost) - Resolved for 1 day only

So what I'm saying is don't make the same mistake as me and get overly excited when all seems to be working well only to have your dreams crushed later lol. Just keeps on testing the line, use the phone regularly, restart the router, etc. Just keep pushing that line and testing it thoroughly to detect issues before they close the case since re-opening ends up with a standard technie again. I have 3 Telkom ref numbers already. Also please keep on posting any findings you have in this thread.

In the meantime I'm going for a South African record. 4 technies and 2 specialists. Let's see how far I can go.

also dropping sync for hours on end until I received a phone call which was quite frustrating so I got my friend to call me every morning :).

Had 7 days of no problems before then it came back without them doing anything so I won't jump the gun until it doesn't do anything for over a month.

Lost count of my record, but I have over 7 attended faults and one network engineer for KZN trying to help me.

Yeah what I usually did was phone my cellphone or just leave the phone on dial tone for 20 - 40 seconds until the ADSL light comes on. It's not fool proof but did the job for the most part just to get on the forum.
