Hi,

I have a 2Mbps ADSL line with Mweb and in the past 5 months I've had intermittent problems connecting to our server via RDP at various times of the day ( "various times of the day" = sometimes in the mornings + afternoons + evenings OR afternoons + evenings ... but generally the latter ).

This has been very frustrating and I cannot understand ... until today, I did some research and found that our internet upload speed is quite low!

According to speedtest.net (I don't know how reliable this test is)

Ping: 12ms
Download speed: 2.23 mbps
upload speed: 0.26

According to internethealthtest.org:

My fastest and slowest test results to : 0.78mbps

First off, how are these speeds altogether ? Normal? Slow?
Now I am assuming that in order to do a RDP connection, you need a decent upload speed am I correct?

Same problem here. The server is on a 4+MB line. I get a 'internal error has occurred".
In the early mornings (4am) it works no problem.

It started about a month ago.

Oh an T-man has just reminded me that I forgot to say one important thing! As soon as midnight passes, I am able to connect to my server via RDP! It's like some daily reset! So I can generally connect in the mornings but as the day goes by the more difficult it is to connect!

@T-man - does RDP give you that message? I just get this: http://pasteboard.co/1b1OBZ5p.jpg

I had similar problem trying to conect to my sql server
Daytime struggling
After midnight workings fine
6mbps uncapped premium
Ave 300gb per month so not over use

300gb per month! That's more than 10 times our (yes 3 ppl's) usage! So throttling cannot be an issue for me!

It's probably because the traffic is p2p. You might as well just move away from mweb, if you trying to run a business or do any business related work.

:erm: if I understand right, you connect directly to your server without connecting to a VPN first?

Poor security.

@the_librarian ... VPN and security = a headache for another day.
@ajan ... I've been with Mweb for many many years now and I've never had this issue until 4 / 5 months ago. P2P with Mweb?

It seems that Mweb has started blocking the RDP protocol a couple of months ago. RDP connections work when using another ISP.

@bigchop ... thanks for that information. How is it possible that Mweb knows that I am RDP'ing when it's merely just using the internet to connect (like we use the internet for everything)? It's not that I cannot connect, I just have problems not being able to connect at certain parts of the day, mainly the afternoons and evenings which is a pain when I need to get work done. A work around is to use my cellphone ISP to connect. I think I need to write to Mweb or wait 60th in que + blow my phone bill for an answer whilst I listen to their convenient marketing bullsh*t

PS: No offense to the forum, but I am surprised that none of my actual questions (simple ones too for the tech savvy) have been answered

Potmanpot ... lol not really, yesterday I was 60th and I'm not kidding. Then again they were having major issues with their email server just recently

It sounds like a shaping issue since you can connect after midnight, why doent you use teamviewer? Its much less hassle.

Mweb blocking the RDP protocol? Good news, it is not secure.

Only way then is with Teamviewer or setting up an VPN and then gaining access to RDP that way. I've done it numerous times before.

I got teamviewer and I will look into that - never thought of that alternative, thanks! I just feel like it's absolutely RIDICULOUS being throttled with upload speed (is it because of upload speed???). I've been a clients of Mweb for some 10 years + ... I'm not going to go with alternative methods because of this. I just need to know what's causing my struggle to connect and I will contact mweb directly and hopefully sort it out.

I've been a clients of Mweb for some 10 years + ...

Sadly they don't give a ****. Only if you pay them on time.

The perfect solution would be to move away from mweb if you have to deal with p2p constantly. The quickest and effective solution, would be what librarian said, get a local/international vpn. Just put all your traffic on http, and start abusing the network while you at it. They don't seem to mind the latter, as only 1% of their client-base does it.

I hear you! Spit in the ocean, right! To be quite honest, all this p2p, vpn "all traffic on http" talk etc is dutch to me.
However if I understand correct, p2p is a shared network. So are you saying that my internet isn't just mine, but shared amongst other adsl clients?

Local / international VPN ... we are still talking about adsl here? In fact all of these terminologies?

It's not secure meaning?

6. Disable RDP
The Cryptolocker/Filecoder malware often accesses target machines using Remote Desktop Protocol (RDP), a Windows utility that allows others to access your desktop remotely. If you do not require the use of RDP, you can disable RDP to protect your machine from Filecoder and other RDP exploits. For instructions to do so, visit the appropriate Microsoft Knowledge Base articles. (links given in link above)
