Briefly, bought the 2gb/month sim and a Vodaphone R201 router at the Pav yesterday. (Yes it does wcdma 900.) Connected at the Pav quickly whick seemed at hsdpa speeds. Come home and despite very red area, no sign of anything but edge, on either router or htc desire. Been driving around kloof/hillcrest and no signs of any hsdpa network.

So is there a local tower problem or is the coverage map very optomistic?

i just got back to my office in pinetown with my new 21mb stick. I had to force the connection manager to lock onto 3G only to get it to work....

and the speeds are really not that good at all.... speed test gives me a 0.21mb/s download result....

edit:.....its getting worse...speedtest

Contact CELL C and see what they say about it - have you also checked the coverage map to see if your area is covered by CELL C - also another option I would recommend is to do a scan with the dongle connected to your computer or notebook and to see if you get any glory to picking up 3G also do a scan to see if your dongle picks up 3G not EDGE, could be an area related fault or your sim card has not been authenticated to receive 3G as yet, go to the store where you bought the DATA SIM/Dongle and ask them to check if your card has been authrized to use the service

It picks up 3G and the dashboard indicates its connected to HSPA+.....

Im gonna try at home in a few min.

I still think you are connected via CELL C edge, did you buy CELL C dongle yes or no or did you actually buy a router instead....

What I want you to do when you get home make sure you read the key features of the box of the router..

Should be something like this

UMTS : 900/2100 MHz
GSm/GPRS/EDGE 850/900/1800/1900

Hi richard. Not too sure who you are directing your " help" at, but if its myself, I think my original post explains what hardware I purchased.

Still no hsdpa but cell c did a customer service call to me, so I explained what has been happening, and a teckie is supposed to be calling. Otherwise I guess I will have too tell Trevor.

I have a similar problem. Got the 5gig option with stick. It connects to 3G at my office, but only connects to Edge at home.
With the sim in my HTC Desire, I can pick up the 3G signal at home, so it doesnt seem to be a network problem, but the modem only connects to Edge. How do i force it to
connect to 3G as the network settings on the stick seem to be locked. By the way, when I called the call center they said that only Durban Central and surrounds are covered and
the rest of the outlying areas will only get coverage later.Dont know how far that is true.

I'm using a black Usb stick. 21.6 mb/s

Jeez I'm in Kloof and after reading this thread I'm cancelling my trip to the Cell C store I had planned for tomorrow! For the time being anyway...

Hi Daveogg

Glad that somebody from Cell C is already assisting you.
If you do not receive any feedback soon, please message us your contact details and we'll follow up from this side.

Ok so I purchased the bundle (For my iPhone 4)

First off: Cell C does not have Micro Sims.
Secondly: The data sim electrical/contact area on the sim is about 50% larger than a normal sim :0!

So I got the consultant to do a sim swap to a normal sim card, and attacked it with the scissors in store
Sim swap was done for free

Took about 3 minutes to activate.

Test Date: 08 October 2010 1:58 PM
Connection Type: Cellular
Server: Durban
Download: 3.05 Mbps
Upload: 0.11 Mbps
Ping: 198 ms

Latitude: -29.8342
Longitude: 31.0327

A detailed image for this result can be found here:

Service is ok - Full 3G signal Chatsworth & Westville.

Speed is anywhere from 200kb (edge) to 3mb
Average Latency/Ping is 200 to 300ms. With 1 spike upto a second.

Overall- I'm very satisfied

Well my house is haulin....pitty my office is so slow..

I peaked 10mb/sec... downloading some music...

okay, i have a few comments and questions. firstly, is 5 bars the maximum connection you can get? i've seen it flicker to hsupa before - does anyone get this and is it faster?

here in pinetown, the average speeds i'm getting is 1.5mbps. so not amazing but completely sufficient for me. the connection is very stable, which is great. i've downloaded files over a gig already and have not been disconnected once.

people must also remember that the upload and download speeds they show on the cell c dashboard depend on what you are doing with the connection - if you're just browsing the internet, then it should only show a download speed of a few kbps. if you're downloading a file from a service like rapidshare (free user) which limits your download speeds, then it might also show only a few kbps. the important thing is how many bars reception you are getting and the corresponding color on your speedstick. cyan is the fastest, blue is fast and green is slow.

Ok decided to get it anyway, just started using it in Kloof, so far so good on the 7.2 modem
