Project Linobuntu

How are you doing this, Lino? You using reconstructor?

Now you have to go and spoil the secret:p yes that and also Remastersys. However that is only for only versions, more changes etc as time goes on.

Using this to at least have something to start with.

At the speed which you are going at I'm going a guess that you are not really creating a new distro, only making personalized Ubuntu desktop LiveCD?
Using one of those apps to create a LiveCD of your current desktop system?

If you realy are interrested in creating a distro from scratch (of course you can borrow the toolchains and whatnot from whoever, in this case Ubuntu), then read the Linux From Scratch handbook. It is not as difficult as it seems, specially if you can piggy-back off of another distro.

You are correct, I am not creating a new distro. As previously stated it is based on Ubuntu 8.04.1 thus it is a customized version of it.

Talking about LFS that is actually what got me started with it, been reading it quite a bit. However at the moment I think it would be easier to first alter what already exists than start from scratch.

"Sort of what Mint Linux already does."

At the moment I am just testing the waters to see how far this project will go.

Okay, but just to clarify - Mint is more than just a customised ubuntu. They have created a number of tools and apps of their own. Sure, they use ubuntu as a base, but they have been discussing moving to a debian base.

Good luck Lino, have fun. :)

This sounds like a cool idea, LM. Any chance that you'd consider blogging all your steps somewhere, so that we can see what's involved in the process, PLEASE???

Quite right, Mint has turned into its own version of Linux. Which might I just add I actually love Mint Linux;). If I was not in the mood to create Linobuntu I would probably just use Mint.

Thanks and I shall have lots of fun.

Funny enough you mention blogging all of this. Last night I was actually thinking of setting up a blog for Linobuntu. I shall setup one soon with all the details etc.

I just want all of you to know, at the moment Linobuntu is not planning to be a completely different disto. For now it is a highly customized version of Ubuntu.

If the project continues then I hope we will eventually be more than just customized.

Everyone so far your support has been fantastic, I love the enthusiasm:D

Blog coming soon

Even if it stays a "highly customized version of Ubuntu", I reckon the detailed info could be invaluable for other tweakers out there.

hey linoman, I am not sure if you checked if you could actually call a distro Lino-buntu? I read on distrowatch that Canonical had issues with other distro's using the Ubuntu-or -buntu suffix?? I may be wrong?

Well that is a very good point. So far I have not found any issues with it. Will look into it though.

However some of the software I wanted to include can not be

mainly

skype and adobe (damn licences)

So far the numbering of Linobuntu will be as follows.

0.0.1 > 0.5.0 Alpha.

0.5.1 > 0.9.9 Beta.

1.0.0 First Official/Stable Release.

Post edited and improved numbering system used. Thanks to Keeper

Example Alpha 1 will be known as build "0.1"

example Beta 1 will be known as build "0.10"

rather try a different scheme, as 0.1 and 0.10 is the same

when I code, I wouldn't do it that way - would get confused.

Major Version . Minor Version . Tiny Update.

1.1.4 is not very old to 1.1.6 but 1.1.4 is much older than 1.3.0

2.0.0 would be a big update/release.

start at like 0.1.0 and work up to 0.1.1 , 0.1.2 > 0.1.9 and then 0.2.0 and then 0.3.0 up to 0.9.0 and then release it as 1.0.0 when ready. (hope that didn't confues, LOL)

how about keeping it linobuntu 8.04; in this way people would immediately know what its derivative is?? No?

This is what will make this a fantastic distro. We already have community involvement;)

At the moment I am just finding out about the naming scheme. Otherwise it will have to be renamed.

easy.

Would this be something that a non-Linux user could simply install and have a go at?

...take it easy on the non-geek :p

This project is really interesting, will definitely try it out once it's up and running.

That is the aim, a complete Linux Desktop that can accomplish most basic tasks.

This project is really interesting, will definitely try it out once it's up and running.

Thank you

A note on the planned included software.

Due to some legal and licence issues, I have had to remove and rather substitute a few applications.

Namely:

Adobe Reader, Skype, Downloader For X.

Possibly more changes coming
