As a Linux user, I often end up with Gnome vs KDE etc. However my personal favorite is Gnome with KDE applications added to it.

I usually spend hours customizing my Ubuntu install etc. The project, Linobuntu aims to bring just that to users. No need to remove all the Gnome software and replace it with KDE. It is already done for you.

Named Linobuntu :D

I plan for it to have the following: (Please note this list has changed since originally posted).

1) The first release will be based on Ubuntu 8.04.1. Therefore all the changes and improvements in Ubuntu will apply to this disto.

This version was chosen as it is currently better supported and is more stable.

2) The desktop will use Gnome 2.23, however the gnome menu will be replaced with an improved version.

At the moment for the first release there are no plans to use the latest Gnome 2.24. That will be included in a later release.

3) A community theme and icon pack installed by default. This version might still use default splash screens etc.

4) The documentation in this release, will still be the default found in Ubuntu 8.04.1. However if everything goes according to plan, this should be changed in future releases.

5) Multimedia support will be out of the box, similar to what Mint Linux offers. Please note it is your responsibility to find out if you may use the installed codecs in your country.

6) Due to how the default Ubuntu scripts work, Linobuntu will be unable to provide Nvidia and Ati drivers out of the box. However to address this and make installation easier. Envy will be installed to assist users with installing their drivers.

7) At the current moment the first release of Linobuntu will be 99% compatible with Ubuntu 8.04.1 (therefore any extra software you will require will work fine if it is designed for Ubuntu 8.04.

8) Included software applications: (Some changes coming)

Amarok
aMule
KPDF (Can not legally include Adobe Reader)
Macromedia Flash support and Sun Java JRE
KGet (Downloader For X, could post legal issue thus replaced)
Google Picasa
Google Earth
Totem with all codecs and dvd playing support (MPlayer is too buggy and harder to implement)
NTFS Configuration Tool (ntfs-config)
K3B
k9copy
Amsn
Gtkpod
Ktorrent

Please note the following:

If you use Linobuntu, due to the fact it includes restricted software to allow multimedia playback. You must agree to the following, if not then do not use it.

1) The legal restrictions do not apply in your country.
2) You have permission to use the software, an official license.
3) You using this software for research purposes only.

Alpha 4, is currently under going internal testing.

Creating a distro is not for the faint of heart.

Do you know programming? Bash scripting?

I know more bash scripting than programming. I'll just use this as a hobby and see where it takes me

Well if you get anywhere, I would like to try it out, so make a live cd please.

so you just add what apps it must have a BAM! a new operating system? hmm....good luck man.

Good luck - do let us know when the new distro is out so we can try it out...

...and maybe rename it to MyBBOS? :p

Hey Pooky, will see what happens. I shall do my best to make sure there is a live cd.

However I am first going to start with a 64 bit edition and if that works. Or if there is any interest I shall make a 32 bit version as well.

Well not a new operating system just a derivative of Ubuntu. To join the many of them;)

Just a hobby really, will see what happens. Thanks man:D

Hey thanks man

I'll let everyone know when the distro is released. Or should I say a beta of it;)

I like the name MyBBOS:p

Guys what do you think, should the first version rather be based on Intrepid (8.10) or Hardy (8.04)

Construction of Linobuntu Alpha 1 has started. Expected release Saturday.

Due to the fact Linobuntu aims to be user friendly and stable. For the first alpha release, Ubuntu 8.04.1 was chosen.

Good news is that, this will work on any normal PC. A live cd should be included as well.

Wow that is a great and wonderful offer.

I at the moment need

A logo that says "Linobuntu"

To use that logo while the system is booting up.

Not to mention a wallpaper as well, which would also say Linobuntu on it.

If you could I would be eternally grateful

Do you guys have any recommendations for a community theme I could use?

will work on it now - any ideas?

Well, to be honest none at all.

I am better at the techie stuff than actual art work. (I am terrible at art:p)

As long as we can pick a community theme, and a matching GDM. Then have the logo for boot up and maybe also on the wallpaper.

I guess it should match the chosen theme, any ideas mate?

Personally though I like the "dust theme" and the "New wave theme"

The first post has been updated, lots more information added.

At the speed which you are going at I'm going a guess that you are not really creating a new distro, only making personalized Ubuntu desktop LiveCD?
Using one of those apps to create a LiveCD of your current desktop system?

If you realy are interrested in creating a distro from scratch (of course you can borrow the toolchains and whatnot from whoever, in this case Ubuntu), then read the Linux From Scratch handbook. It is not as difficult as it seems, specially if you can piggy-back off of another distro.
