Prostate test

And my follow up consultation three weeks ago ended up with me getting a prostate biopsy today. Wasn’t too bad but it is an hospital procedure with full anaesthetic and operating room.
 
Just got all the bills. About R31,000! Discovery paid it all except R300. What that is for I don’t know. Not going to argue for R300.
 
So PSA, start getting that PSA blood test every fews years from around mid 40s.

Edit: same abbreviation! Public Service Announcement... get that Prostate-Specific Antigen test when your doc says you should.
 
You know what I don't mind sharing (anon), it might help someone else. So I will have a scrape done in two weeks. They open you up below your belly button and then remove stuff from the inside of your prostate. That allows it to decrease in size. Three nights in hospital. In turn it means you empty your bladder fully when urinating. Problem currently apparently is there are always a bit of urine remaining that causes prostate and bladder infections. Then after that about 2-3 months later they will implant radio active pellets in the prostate that will kill off the starting cancer.

They measure the risk in Gleason score, mine is 6/10 which is the start of the process, so currently the prospective is good for recovery.

Edit: to be clear 6 is the minimum, you don't get below it. Not intuitive so don't get stuck on the number.

I saw my late dad's ,(Jan '26) prostrate scrape. Many years of all treatments until it came back and matastasized. He was 86. Gents,just do the test every year. With the s*t that we put our bodies through day after day. Check yourself

It's a question I did not ask in my shock today. How often do they need to repeat this?

So what made you concerned in the first place? Repeated bladder infections?

I'm no expert in this. My father had gone through radiation and the whole sh*t years before and he was good. Very active and all that. He first went through the radiation early 2005 I think-not sure but didn't think much about it but hey....Appeared again 2020. Went through same treatment with some added steps. In that time it was fine but it started swelling again. He had a great Dr. Medical aid was talking sh*t. It wasn't like it wasn't being monitored. But suddenly sh*t changed. Opening and scraping of the pipes for lack of a better word. Yay! We've passed a milestone but no. Now it's catheters and x-rays and and and. Long story long. It ended with just managing his pain. That fcked me up. Watching my idol my motivation not being able to be his active self. Having to pick him up just to what we consider a normal part of our lives. He hated every part of not being able to do for himself.

I know this is not great to hear. It doesn't mean stop caring but it doesn't mean you must stop giving the care and attention to your pops. He'll tell you when he's ready to go. That's just my peace.

I think I mentioned it earlier but not sure.

Since 2019 my PSA was yoyoing. Goes up and Dr prescribes anti biotics and it goes down (anti biotics in theory does not respond to cancer). By this years yoyo he said, nah, needs a urologist. So the story begins...

I have had 0 bladder infection symptoms. I am complete unaware of an issue.

How old was he if I may ask. I realise time may be up, but you know...
 
I'm sorry my G. I was not trying to make you feel some type of way. But early detection is what it is 🤞🏾
