As I was busy checking what it on TV before I switched it off I saw the E-TV extra on DSTV with Debra speaking to two woman for and against the legalizing of prostitution.

A few things where mentioned and got me thinking. In general I'm all against it so pls just hear me out before you make any assumptions.

Now benefits of it being legal:

1. Ladies will have protection against attacks, Rape, Murder.
2. The industry can be regulated, meaning: Forced medical checkups, Tax claimed, and the woman be removed from the street into more reputable buildings.
3. These woman will not be used as slaves and could turn out to be a very lucrative business.

Cons:

1. This will open the door to allot of other illegal activities if not correctly controlled. Drugs, minors being lured in because of the big money (It is already happening but it will be so much worse and easier to happen once it's legal.)
2. Married men frequent these prostitutes even now with it being illegal, once it's legal this will cause a mess. Sure there is other things coming into play like divorces and so forth, but it being legal will just make it worse.
3. With the current HIV infection rate we have in SA, and condoms not being a sure solution this will only cause the infection rate to climb even more.

That is just some key points I recall before switching off. Wish I could have listened to the whole debate but I was too tired. So what do you guys think ?

Pls in your opening post just indicate if you are for it being legal or against it. I'll try and request a poll. Would be interesting to see what you guys think.

I'm against it, but there is some benefit to it being legalized. But what will the outcome be in the future if it's made legal?

Against it!

Prostitutes wont want to go for forced medical check-ups or pay tax. So you'll still have it happening underground. And i feel if we legalise prositutition then where does it end? It is not acceptable so it shouldn't be legal. Next drugs will be legal and we will just decay as a society.

Drugs and prostitution should be legalized and highly regulated. Like alcohol is already.

Very much against it. Do they imagine that prostitutes in places like Amsterdam are happy and well cared for? It's an evil, exploitative, drug-filled trade that destroys women.

I agree fully.

It's like using this example if I may.

A Man hits his wife, it's illegal and happens daily. However if it's made legal then you will get more and more cases happening because you opened the door on it.

With making it legal you are just opening a door to even more trouble than you currently have which in the long run will only get worse and worse.

What he said.
Why? If we made it legal that would make it acceptable which means even more kids would just run riot experimenting. It leads to so much pain all round. Why would you willlingly want to do that to families?
Kids experiment as it is. Alcohol is illegal for under 18s, and drugs are illegal altogether, but that doesn't stop them from trying. How do you know that kids don't visit hookers as it stands?

I agree with you on a pure bussiness / logical scale. (Not moral though :p)

I would just like to see the gouvernment prove they can handle basic thinks, like municipal duties, right before they tackle a big thing like this :)

Govt losing out on plenty much big heap tax by not legalizing it and weed. Kinda Stupid IMHO. If I'm not wrong then it would create a few jobs downstream as well.

Govt should really take a long hard look at legalizing it,

We already have a problem with alcohol and excessive use. What are we going to tell our kids now? "You can only have one line of coke tonight okay Billy?" You cannot effectively teach children to be responsible with drugs. They already aren't responsible with alcohol.

Hell yeah! Next we can legalize murder... o wait thats already legal it seems
Some things you just need to ban because of morals, people have no morals and as soon as they are offered an opportunity to do something immoral they will jump at the opportunity like moths to a flame!

I'm not saying they don't. But by legalising it you are making it okay and it's not! It will just lead to more and more.

What's the argument here ?

Prostitution is, was and always will be.

So legalise it, create red-light regions where you can monitor sex-workers.

What's the alternative - keep arresting them but never their clients ?

Can someone PLEASE answer this question:

Why is it illegal to pay for something you can give away to anyone at anytime for free?

You arguments are deeply flawed and can be reframed:

Alcohol should not be made legal because then married men would buy it more often, get drunk and hit their wives. Drunk people would drive around freely killing innocent motorists and pedestrians. If alcohol was made legal then shebeens would increase in number and children would get drunk all the time. Murder and violence would increase. People would die from alcohol poisoning and liver problems.

Punish the abuse, violence and illegal activity. Don't punish the simple business transaction.

By the way, I would never use a prostitute - i just think its ludicrous to make sex a crime. It's a religious objection, nothing more.

This is exactly what is wrong with the world today. We seem to have lost sight of our morals.

So okay let's live in a world full of sex and drugs and alcohol. Wooohooo sounds like one helluva party!!

I get what you are saying

Now your saying that it should be legal and highly regulated. However it's already happening with underage drinking and drug abuse at a young age. Imagine what this will do if it's legal  We think we have a problem now, wait till they legalize drugs and prostitution.

Even the Netherlands is planning on removing the drugs legal thing they have currently as it's just causing more and more problems.

In that case selling kids are the black market is not something any of us should object to either. Since it's a simple business transaction. Perhaps we have to stop and think that not everything in life is for sale to the highest bidder.

Here's an idea. Don't sell your body.

If you engage in an indecent, illegal act then you'll suffer the consequence of your actions.

I don't know really I'm not against it and I'm not for it either... I'm on the fence

I have never been in a situation where i have had to pay directly for sex... until then i won't judge... i always pay indirectly...

it's like porn. ask people if they watch it and they will give you a straight NO... but when you leave then in a room alone and put on a porn movie and see what happens... most people watch porn but will never admit it...
