We used to used to use the backrest planks from our school benches, but grandfather did buy me several cheap bats as a kid and eventually a Duncan Fernley. That lasted by whole High Schools and a couple of Club Cricket years.

My theory is: Soccer is the sport played mostly by black people, it's a cheap sport. All you need to play is a ball. With bowling, all you need is a ball as well so this is relatively cheap too. To become a batsman, a start up cricket kit with pads and bat will cost you around R1000 which costs a bit more. This is why, IMHO, you will get black bowlers coming through and not batsman.

I seriously doubt Pakistan, India and Sri Lanka who produce world class batters have their younsters forking out fortunes on bats and pads.

Then the question still stands, why aren't black batsman coming through the ranks? Last year, teams had to select 1 black cricketer in their teams, this year, it was upped to 2 and the only batsman that has come through was Bavuma who had a good season last year.

Many top cricket schools have a good representation of non white cricketers. The SA Schools team hasn't had a white captain since 2010.

In other news, Marlon Samuels made a run a ball century yesterday against the invitational team.

And the run-fest continues...

SAf Invit XI 125
West Indians 357/2 (65.5 ov)

West Indians lead by 232 runs with 8 wickets remaining in the 1st innings

Not sure what the Windies are trying to achieve. Surely they should be retiring to give the rest of the team a chance to bat and practice out in the middle. It's not like this match will count toward the FC statistics

Overnight situation was:

SAf Invit XI 125 & 17/0 (6.2 ov)
West Indians 508
South African Invitation XI trail by 366 runs with 10 wickets remaining

...but there isn't much chance of rain anytime soon. It's raining at the mo and even the ducks are not venturing out.
