Makhura says Auditor-General to probe Alexandra Renewal Project

JOHANNESBURG - Gauteng Premier David Makhura says the Auditor-General will be looking into the Alexandra Renewal Project (ARP) to investigate what happened to the money allocated to it.
Makhura on Tuesday addressed the media after his meeting with the Alexandra shut down committee.The group made a number of requests to the premier saying the construction of illegal structures was their main concern.Makhura has committed his government to demolishing any structures that are found to be erected unlawfully.He said the probe conducted by the Auditor-General would centre on the ARP which was launched during former President Thabo Mbeki’s tenure in 2001.“I want to dismiss any notion that national government put billions of rand into the ARP. The ARP was funded by the City of Johannesburg and the provincial government.”

Makhura said there was progress.

'Cries have fallen on deaf ears': public protector and rights council to probe Alex grievances

The public protector and the SA Human Rights Commission have joined forces to find lasting solutions to the service delivery grievances plaguing Alexandra.


"In our experience, communities take to the streets when they believe their cries have fallen on deaf ears,” said public protector Busisiwe Mkhwebane on Wednesday.


"It is important for people to be aware that chapter 9 of the constitution establishes the Human Rights Commission and my office essentially for people to vindicate their rights on matters such as public service delivery," she said.

Alex protests an ANC campaign – Malema charges

The EFF is the latest political party to label Alexandra protests an ANC creation.

The party's leader Julius Malema told journalists during a media briefing at its headquarters on Thursday that while the demands and concerns of those living in the township were valid, he believed the #AlexandraTotalShutDown campaign was the brainchild of the ANC.

"It's a campaign strategy which is going to backfire big time on the ANC. Let them go on instigating, but they must know it will spread to the municipalities they are in," Malema warned.

Residents of the historic township have been protesting over a lack of service delivery and mushrooming informal settlements since last week. They have also attempted to take their demands to its more affluent neighbour Sandton and asked for a meeting with Johannesburg Mayor Herman Mashaba.

Mashaba, who also blamed the ANC for the demonstrations, has failed to meet with residents - a move Malema says should have happened a long time ago.

"Mashaba doesn't think properly. He should have gone on the second day, nothing would have happened to him. He should have gone to Alex and got humiliated. If you want to be a leader, you can't be scared to be booed, howled [at] and insulted," said Malema.

So the ANC screwed up for decades and now using their screw ups as a source of protest against the DA.

You simply can't make this stuff up. It's like a scene from Idiocracy or some really poorly written B-Grade movie full of severe plot holes.

It's just the ANC baiting him into this mess so that they can claim he is destroying people's homes. He should start with the protest leaders, demolish their homes.

But then aside from the electioneering there should be a plan to formalise and make most of the illegal stuff legal and to transfer property ownership.

Thanks. I confused him and the jhb mayor Mashaba. Maybe I'm over analysing it. Maybe it is just the usual ANC voters fighting and protesting about their own stupid life choices.

That was requested by gauverment for them to obtain a license. I remember years ago when MTN started, they first had to provide services covering townships.
 
Wow... Cyril went to Alex yesterday and promised the people 1 million houses!

Since 1994 only 3 to 4 million RDP houses have been built, I think he's lying.

1 Million houses? So that's 540 every 24 hours, every day, public holidays and weekends included, for the next 5 years. Damn, you better get to it then.

In true politician style I highly doubt there are time frames attached to the promise.
