PS3 on a crt - worth it?

I've heard from a few friends that the PS3 is really only worth getting if you have a HD TV. I still have a CRT non HD TV. Obviously the pic don't be as good as a HD but it it still worth getting? Or do you really need a HD TV as well to appreciatre the full beauty of it?

You just cannot compare playing the PS3 or Xbox360 on a LCD vs a CRT. LCD looks so much better. You don't need to buy a big HD TV, you can also buy a normal computer 19" LCD (widescreen), that should also look good.
 
Playing an "HD console" on a CRT isn't pointless, there's a lot more to great looking games than pixel count. There are occasionally issues with small text, but that's the developers issue.

What will be totally pointless is Blu-Ray, which is why I would gingerly ask, why not look at the 360 instead? It has all the same cross platform games (about 80-90% the same games) and has some fantastic exclusives and awesome online. In the mean time, you can save the money you would've spent on PS3 (~R2k) towards a nice HDTV. When you finally get one, if you still want a PS3, you can sell/trade in the 360, or better yet keep both.

I could write up all the pros and cons regarding CRT vs LCD when it comes to PS3/Xbox 360 gaming, but I'll give you the short version.

Not worth it.
 
Buy a xbox and with the money you save buy a pc lcd monitor. You should be able to get a 22" samsung.
 
the ps3 is a beautiful console. I own a 360 and a ps3 and imo the ps3 hardware is superior; it runs smoother and the interface looks much more, um 'elegant' for your media presentations and the like. that being said, i have been using my xbox far more often then my ps3 for one simple reason: games. the cross platforms run well and xbox exclusives are excellent. with regard to hd/sd both consoles really do well; remember HD can always be done at a later stage. Think of the console from a gaming aspect rather than the eye candy view; in that regard, the xbox has currently got a definative edge wrt its range. Honestly though, if sony spruced up its gaming library, the ps3 would be THE console. And dnt let anyone tell u different about blueray; its incorporation into the ps3 is brilliant and, on hd, it redefines your @home movie nights. on sd however, it should come down to games.

I was in a simular situation recently.
Gonna buy a lovely sansui 32' lcd tv for my xbox!
The sales lady said to me "Its perfect if you want to play a ps3 on it!"
Obviously as a soon to be ex-ps3 owner i had to sort her out and said:
"Just because im getting a flatscreen doesnt mean im made of money.Im buying this tv after i sell the ps3!"
Now its just gonna be my xbox and the lovely tv![and pc of course]
 
The ps3 isn't worth it full stop, sorry if a little bit of fanboi is coming through. . . :D

When do you intend upgrading to a HDTV? ie How long will you be 'stuck' with a PS3 on CRT?
 
Not sure - for a while I think. Can't see myself getting a HD TV within the next 2 years. Unless I get a unexpected increase :)
 
well... I game on a crt with my ps3 (lightening owned my 32" lcd before we insured it :eek:) and i'm happy... they only thing is that the text is a bit small, but other wise, it's perfect... but i suggest getting an xbox 360 because it's cheaper, the ps3 is really for sony lovers, and HD fans

Nothing wrong with Sansui, I've been using a 40" Sansui for almost 2 years now and it looks and works great.
 
If I could add my Xbox 2c here, I had a 74cm CRT which I thought was fine. Until I bought my 32" LCD. Suddenly I could read the text in Mass Effect and see the map icons in Burnout Paradise. To anyone who says the can play games on a normal CRT, I agree but its a handicap.
