I have to agree with Maestro the RRoD story is stale and if that's all the PS3 fanboys can come up with they need to move on, the issue has been dealt with at a service and a technical level.

There are also third party peripherals, including logitech wheels, for the 360. on the play and charge, thanks, I much rather have generic rechargeable AAA's that I use with everything else as well. My console is above my TV so using a cable is a no no.

Syba, your games list is misleading, most of those are Cross platform anyway. Lets ask the question another way, how many award winning exclusive games are there on the PS3? None. On the 360? tons, Crackdown, Gears of war, Bioshock, Mass Effect, Halo 3 are all critically acclaimed and award winning games.

For all Sony's bravado, the PS3's exclusives this year are dull. There are in all honesty 2 games that stand a chance of any praise and that's MGS4 and LBP. Everything else is just a common sequel (That includes GT5:P), or mediocre shooter. Compare that to the 360. Fable won many RPG of the years and Fable 2 looks amazing, Gears 2 -it would take a major mess to screw it up. Ninja Gaiden 2, benchmark action game, Banjo Kazooie - legendary platformer, Alan Wake, Too Human, APB - look amazing and have the pedigree. Halo wars could revolutionise console RTS. Then for the jRPG fans there's Infinite undiscovery, tales of Vesperia, operation darkness to name just a few.

...And Microsoft haven't even started making the big surprise noises yet. The first 4 months are the quietest of the year and Microsoft have been pouring their efforts into GTA4. You think they're just going to sit on their hands while Sony (or Nintendo) chomps up Europe?

Another thing that hasn't been mentioned, that Sony has no answer to, is Community Arcade. I managed to sample both some of the games from GDC and play with XNA, and all I can say is the mind boggles.

And as far as live goes, you're making it sounds far worse than it is. There is no need to commit CC fraud (anymore ;) ) and the entire thing can be up and running in 15 minutes. As far as having to use forums to find local games... I'll just smile and wave . . . .How's that cross game chat and invites coming along? MSN messenger integration? Live web stats? Or more pertinent, has anyone on a PS3 actually gotten in to a GTA4 multiplayer game yet? The fact that there are at least 4 times more local players willing to go the extra mile to use live over PSN should tell you something. The fact that I'm posting his at 3am after just spending 4 hours playing GTA4 on live should tell you even more ;)

I also own both and against my better judgement would like to give my opinion.

The PS3 is a very nice machine which screams quality at you. It's overall build just feels so much nicer. It's much quieter than the X-Box in general, although when it gets stressed out it gets just as noisy, but you don't really notice because this is when you are playing a game and the sound should be drowned out. And yeah, it's got a Blu Ray player which you may or may not care about, but want it or not is a significant Plus. It's also got built in wireless (I find it far better to run a cable to my TV Room for both X-Box and PS3 (and media player). BTW, trying to get decent Blu Ray movies in SA is an excercise in futility. Even importing is a bitch. Things like Aliens and LotR simply aren't available, yet. PS3 can use any old memory stick (and HDD) as opposed to X-Box's proprietry ones. (I have only used a memory stick on either once, and that was to put my uber Gears of War theme onto my PS3). You can, for some really strange reason, put Linux onto the PS3. If you care about this, you need to get out more. Overall, the PS3 is a really nice package, and at R4,500, really decent value for money.

The X-Box interface is much nicer than the PS3 one. Better organised and cleaner in general. X-Box live is light years ahead of PSN, both in terms of design and content (but you pay some negligable amount for it, I forget what it is, it's that insignificant). Currently it has a significantly larger games library available for it. It has those accursed gamer point thingies which are horribly addictive. X-Box is by far the dominant console in SA, which affects multiplay as well as the availability of 2nd hand games. At just under R3,000 for a Pro, the X-Box is fantastic value for money.

Overall, they are both great consoles which offer very similar experiences. Both have a couple of nice exclusives, but the majority of top games are available as cross platform titles. Both are mediocre media players in terms of playing downloaded movies / TV Series. I think that the PS3 hardware is (slightly) superior. Not in terms of performance which is pretty much the same, but in terms of manufacture and packageing. But I think that the X-Box software (OS and Live) is (significantly) superior. Of course it is easier to revise software than hardware. Is either console going to inherently be more fun than the other? Absolutely not. The whole fanboi thing is idiotic.

Which should you choose? I'd echo the advice I have seen on certain gaming sites. Get the one your friends have so that you can share games and multiplay.

This has all gone pretty well with very little fanboy nonsense included..

I am quite impressed :D

I echo GougedEye sentiment, if all your friends have a certain console then get that one, else get the one with the exclusives that appeal to you...

PS3: LBP, MGS4, GT5, Final Fantasy, Resistance.. etc... (don't anyone mention Killzone)
360: Mass Effect, Bioshock, Halo 3, Forza, PGR... etc...

Now that makes the most sense. Get what your friends got and you immediately got access to some games you can borrow.

Another thing I might add is that it also depends on your budget. Also, look at what games are coming on the consoles. The 360 might have more games than the PS3, but how many of those do you even care for?

I was literally standing in a shop not knowing which console to get after days of research. Finally I thought, which of the games coming to PS3 do I want to play and which for the X360 do I want to play and things like FinalFantasy, LittleBigPlanet, MetagGearSolid, GrandTurismo5 is what I want to play, and the rest like GTAIV is cross platform. It's too bad MS got Fable 2 and Ninja Gaiden 2 exclusive, but that would not have been enough to sway me the other way. Maybe when I don't have something to keep me busy on my PS3 I'll buy a 360 for some of those titles.

So yeah, look at what games are available now and which to come in the rest of this year and decide which of those games you would want to play. Weigh in your budget and what your friends got and decide.

Here's some nice lists of what games are available on the two platforms to help you in your research.

I'll try this fanboy thing:

2) Can answer this in so many ways, but below just a small sample...
Biggest selling sandbox game GTA4 - check - multiplatform
Most successful racing franchise GT5 - check - we have pgr
Best FPS shooter 2007/8 COD4 - check - multiplatform
Best footy franchises FIFA 2008, Pes 2008 - check - multiplatform
Most successful stealth / FPS franchise - MGS - check - not an FPS! - We still have Splintercell.
Most successful golf franchise - Tiger Woods series - check - multiplatform
Most successful fun golf franchise - Everybody's Golf - check -
Most successful fighting franchise - Tekken - check - Possibly multiplatform ;)

Out of the list of games you mentioned here, I will give you MTGS but we still have Splintercell.
You really should look at Exclusive titles only to see the strength of the console's library of games.

@Kage, You don't actually have to concede Tekken because no platforms have been announced and so far all Nanco Bandai's other titles have been 360 exclusive or Cross platform, so it stands to reason it will be on both.

In the end I'll add my agreement with GougedEye's comment. Pick the one you friends will have.

3) The PS3 is outselling the Xbox 360 in every major gaming territory. Lately including the USA.

lol. Did it occur to you that the reason PS3 is outselling the XBox 360 is that everyone (that would buy a PS3) already owns an Xbox? No point in buying 2, duh.

From my own gaming experience, one thing I can say about the hardware is that I am on my second Xbox 360. I still get read errors on my disks, including on GTA 4. My launch day PS3 has not had one problem. Has not ever had one read error. It runs like a well oiled machine. With my 360 I'm always holding my breath for the next read error, or other hardware failure. I have to fiddle with purchasing Live subscriptions via on-line 3rd parties and hope like hell that MS doesn't shut them out.

Ah, glad you brought up GTA IV... thought this thread might be of some interest:

:D

Congrats -what games did you get?

It's the R2999 Pro Bundle from IC which comes with Forza 2 & Viva Pinata (definately won't be playing it). Going to buy Gears of War and COD4 this weekend

Now I need a network adapter which Microsoft should be including with every 360 :(

Viva Pinata is one of my all time favourite games :P

Also the Xbox 360 has a network adaptor just not a wireless adaptor..
I tried wireless and gave up as the streaming was not cool over the distance.. my PC is far from my lounge though...

I just stuck a cable in the roof

I agree - it is quite an addictive little game that.
Little being relative as it can get quite big game with all your critters running around.

Give it a bash - you won't be dissapointed! :D

LOL I looked at the cover and thought it looked way too soft for me :D
Will give it a shot :)

I had the same thought: Oh god a kids game!
Well it turns out to be a bit more complicated than that and then some!
The grafx are quite nice also.

It will keep you busy for a while but start looking out for other games also.
What kind of games do you like to play?

FPS & car games.

Excellent, congrats man.

In that case go burn some cap for the GRiD demo, it just came out! - 800Mb (3 tracks, 2 time trials and online multiplayer are in the demo)

I'd also caution on buying CoD4 - get it second hand or rent it it first. Battlefield Bad company is out in about 6 weeks and I think it's going to steal it's market. But you can't go wrong with Gears of War, that's for sure.

On the wireless thing - I'd also suggest sticking with wired if you can, but if not, steer away from the wireless dongle, it's stupidly expensive. You can pick up a normal Wireless bridge router for under R500 that can then also be used for any other ethernet device in the lounge as well. I'm using an SMC one, cost R450.

Either which way, I look forward to catching you online!
