Sony is Aiming to Ship 30 Million PlayStation 5 Consoles in FY23 According to Sources

The PlayStation 5 is a mythical console that nobody can seem to get, even with its increased price point. However, it seems like Sony wants to address this by selling more console units during the next fiscal year. This information was provided by sources that talked with Insider Gaming after briefly mentioning it in an exclusive report about the PlayStation 5 detachable disc drive version.

So, let's break through this information with some insight regarding this new PlayStation 5 version. According to Insider Gaming's sources, production of the new detachable disc drive console is expected to start in April 2023, with the console hitting the market in September of that year. It was also said that Sony aims to sell 18 million consoles in FY22 and 30.5 million in FY23.

What's gonna happen to the "old" version of the PS5? Well, the console will completely cease production by 2023's holiday season. It’s believed that the new detachable disc drive PlayStation 5 is a means to reduce production costs. Moving forward, the company will only need to manufacture one console but have the two price points of the digital and disc versions.

According to the sources, this could mean that the detachable disc drive will cost $100. This is currently the price difference between the digital and standard PlayStation 5. So, you might see a lot of digital versions of the PlayStation 5 with a disc drive attachment promotion or something like that.

PS5 is Now the Best-Selling Console in the US Ahead of Nintendo Switch

The PS5 restock news over the past years has been disastrous for Sony, especially because of the global chip shortage that continues to hit many tech firms.

In the last 12 months, Nintendo has become the console leader and its streak is projected to zoom this year. However, the latest finding from NPD Group, an established market research firm in North America, shows a different outcome.

Sony has finally grabbed the limelight from Nintendo when it comes to video game console sales for August.

According to PSU, the NPD Group has confirmed that Sony’s PS5 emerged on top of the hardware sales chart for August 2022 in North America. It beat the previous market leader, which is the Nintendo Switch.

The dramatic turn-around of events was surprising for the part of Sony since, so far, Switch has sold the highest number of units this year.

The improvement of its dollar and unit sales is attributed to the stock improvements in the US, per Push Square’s report. The hardware platform looks forward to dominating the dollar sales with three months left in 2022.

The PlayStation 5 and Microsoft’s Xbox Series saw two-digit percentage growth back in July. That’s the time when Sony started to show a huge improvement when it came to its console production.

Excited to see some reviews of this, too bad it's only available next year, and too bad it’s insanely expensive

Sony reportedly blocked Microsoft bringing Xbox Game Pass to PlayStation

Gamers are constantly comparing PlayStation’s subscription service, PlayStation Plus, to Xbox Game Pass. Game Pass is basically an undeniably fantastic service - the value it offers, with tons of great games to play (including day one releases) - many feel that in comparison, PS Plus is a bit lacklustre.

However, as reported by TheGamer, according to The Verge’s Tom Warren, Microsoft actually wanted to bring Game Pass to PlayStation, but Sony didn’t want it. This information was reportedly revealed in a statement from Microsoft to the UK’s Competition and Markets Authority.

This same supposed statement adds that there isn’t “any basis for the idea that acquiring Call of Duty could ‘tip’ subscription services in Xbox’s favour”, doubling down on the sentiment that Microsoft have previously shared that owning the CoD IP won't be impactful, at least for several years. The company previously claimed that they have no plans to make the franchise an Xbox exclusive, anyway, arguing that “the strategy of retaining Activision Blizzard’s games by not distributing them in rival console shops would simply not be profitable for Microsoft”.

Back to Game Pass though, and it’s wild to think that having Microsoft’s subscription service available on a huge rival platform could have even been a possibility. I know that I, for one, would jump straight on the opportunity to play Halo on my PS5. Unfortunately though, for whatever reason, it doesn’t sound like this is going to be an option any time soon.

This is obviously just cheap propaganda. How on earth would anyone expect Sony to allow GP in their eco-system? How exactly would Halo run on the PS5?

I don't know man, Sony has been fighting this all along even though they did say COD will remain on PS for the foreseeable future.

It's because when the deal does close early next year then most if not all of AB games will come on to GP. So when COD launches it will be available on GP on launch day for Xbox and PC while PS players will have to fork out $70/R1400 in order to play. Sony don't like that idea. Neither will all the cod players on PS. It's just business in the end.

To be honest, Sony should pray that the deal go through. Cause if it doesn't, it will signal to Microsoft that to compete it should play the same game ie: pay for exclusives and $70 billion that has to be spent, can buy an awful lot of exclusivity.

With Microsoft's piggy bank it can out bid Sony on any and all 3rd party games.

What has stopped MS from doing that up to now then? I do not think the deal falling through will change much in that regard.

Not so.

Thats just a claim, for now at least.

As for COD, they will honour all existing agreements but iirc Phil did say, over and above that it would make financial sense to keep COD on PS, ie its a huge player base that equals money.
