Hi guys

My P4M800P7MA Motherboard works on a 24 pin PSU (I think).

Problem now is my new GFX card works for a few minutes then my PC reboots or it freezes. Currently I only have a 300w PSU.

So will upgrading the PSU help for this problem ?

I have changed my GFX on the BIOS to 4x AGP and it does last a little longer, I tried this to see if it's power. Now with it being throttled at 4x it does last longer so Yes on the PSU that is if my testing is correct.

Now with me buying a new PSU what should I look for I'm looking for a cheap PSU :o So I guess a 460w should be fine for a 256MB GFX card with a Celeron 3.06 CPU ?

And when I go to the shop what should I look for in this PSU I'm going to buy :p

Thanx again for the help guys.

give more details on the GFX card please. There are a lot of different 256mb cards and they all use different amounts of power. It could very well be your PSU if it's one of those cheap generic one's that come with cheap cases.

GIGABYTE® 360W 24 Pin Power Supply , 4x Molex Connectors, 4x SATA Connectors, Intel LGA775 Ready & Approved, Includes Power Cable.

R250 - R300.

A 300W should be fine for a celeron and an AGP card surely? What else do you have in there?

300W is supposed to be sufficient.

Which make and model is the PSU?

Did you swap the ram and reinstall gfx drivers?
Maybe you are correct and the psu is on its way out.

Sorry guys.

It's a Geforce 6200. The PSU is a Generic one which came with the cheap arse case.
The latest drivers for the card is useless, once I add the latest driver Windows doesn't even load and it reboots itself. I have the 81.?? set of drivers which seems to work fine.

I have not swapped the ram around as yet no. I just find it strange, the card isn't taking any strain. It works perfectly and then a few minutes in it just reboots the PC

It is bloody annoying

Well I had a problem with not enough power and had to go up to 750watt.

But you will know when you dont have enough power, your motherboard will start switching off components it feels are taking too much power. So if its your gfx card, your screen will just switch off as the card switch's off, everything will still be working fine.

Whats the temp like? It might be that your new gfx card is generating too much heat (and that happens a lot more)

The temps are fine, I checked after it reboots and it's cool. I read on the net now I might need to update my Motherboard drivers..... Damn it, does it ever end :p - As per your explenation above it's not the PSU then :o

Mboard details:

Manufacturer - Foxconn
Model - P4M800P7MA

From my experience its not, but as mentioned above, a psu is overlooked most of the time when you put together a new pc, and sometimes it comes back to chow yur butt.

I started out with a 450 watt, and kept on getting problems, but on the box of the 8800gt from xfx (alphadog edition), it states that you need a minimum of 550watt, so I got a 550 and that still did not work (as I had 4 hard drives and 2 dvd writers running also).

So a couple of months I got a 750 watt and now its all working. But a good psu costs a pretty penny, so its best to check everything, you dont want to buy a psu and then still sit with the problem.

But ja, try the drivers, it does sound like a driver issue, with temperature it would usually reboot at regular intervals and the intervals would get smaller and smaller

Not 100% sure of the temps but I check it last night it was around 40 odd on the CPU. I can post it again this afternoon. I don;t have much running on the 300 PSU.

1 hard drive, 2x 512MB ram, 1x Geforce 6200 I even removed in internal Modem. I have onboard Sound.

I doubt it could be a Sound problem, AC97 driver would it cause clashes with the Geforce driver

It sounds like a driver problem then, does it happen at regular intervals? Or when you are busy with something or doing something specific?

Chances are that you'll receive the infamous BSOD if it's a driver problem. Disable the automatic restart (described here) so that you'll see whether it's indeed a BSOD causing the shut down.

You're in Krugersdorp, is there any small possibillity that if I can come to you with my Tower you might be able to have a look at it ?

I'm just so sick of struggling with crap I know nothing about :o
