Hi there,

Looking to play quake 3 online. I know about downloading the point patch or whatever its called and also the promod.

However I don't have the game files. Please can someone tell me if theirs a local link to download it as its open source (I think)

THanks,
Vitrolic

On August 19, 2005, id Software released the complete source code for Quake III Arena under the GNU General Public License,[1] as they have for most of their prior engines. This does not make the entire game GPL, however, as the textures and other data were not released. A project called OpenArena addresses this issue, creating open content and bundling it with the engine as a standalone Quake 3 release.

If I remember right, it's more like the id Tech 3 engine was made open source rather than Quake 3's textures, sounds, character etc. So you can't legally get Quake 3 for free, though I remember reading something about an ad supported version that is free. I don't remember it all that well so I'm not completely certain.

Excellent game, that requires great skill and nerve. A masterpiece of game design and programming. get it

Been a while since I played Quake. Wanna get the PC version. ID dont make Q in PS2 format?

Open source? Since when lol?

The engine is opensource since a couple of years back. The rest of the game isn't. I think there's at least one free adaption floating around, but I don't know if anyone plays it.

There was a version for PS2 called Quake 3 Revolution.

Its not worth the trouble.Nothing much to this game but run and gun.

Yeah, and there's not much to rugby but run and ball, and there's not much to Formula 1 but driving around in a circle. That doesn't mean that these things aren't (or weren't, in the case of Quake) insanely popular.

to TF2 :) and Battlefield Heroes when that comes out.. and Quake Live !!! :D

Edit: I just realised the OP asked for local links. :o

lol Played it some of the players are very good lost attention after 5 minutes and nothing but jumping and firing unrealistic plasma guns, no thought required, I rather play Dota or something. This sucks for me.

I can still see why this game not played anymore and the server is empty 24/7 cause people upgraded their PC go upgrade your junk pc and move on to not necessarily new but better stuff.:P

No thought required??? lol not only do you need insane reflexes and reactions but you constantly gotta be thinking about timing on weapons and armor and the mega health or quad damage. This game is about making decisions very quickly, you cant stop and have a little brainstorming session. This is definitely one of the best multi-player games I've ever played.

The only way to see how crazy the top guys are is to play on the same level. Dont just mindlessly run though a map just waiting for someone to jump into your crosshair, THATS boring.

As for DoTA .... pffft played way too much of that game once upon a time, there is a skill to it i wont lie but nothing in comparison.

Quake 3 >>> DotA in terms of skill no doubt about that whatsoever.

Agreed with st3bas as well, I have never played Dota, and really don't have the urge to do so either, but in my book Q3 >>>Dota as well :)
