Quest for the best value SUV

Mitsubishi ASX is also nice.
Freelander 2 is also something to be looked at. Only hearing good things about this one.

I'd personally got for a late model Discovery 2 V8, but they are not light enough on fuel compared to the other vehicles mentioned. (oh, and it's a proper 4x4, not a SUV :p)

Mind me asking why the Renault Kaleos isn't on the list
Any other reason other than : It's french

No kidding. See above. Fazda made that claim.
I simply made the logical assumption that whichever car is the best selling (most common on the road) will inevitably become the most stolen vehicle.

As I have stated before, based on where I reside and where I travel to I will gladly upgrade my hilux (which I have had for over 2 years without any issues) to a fortuner. :D

You are basically saying all but one in a million Fortuner owners get targeted.

I have 3 friends with Fortuners, none of them have had an attempted hijack or their SUV stolen. None of them have rolled over either. A lot of these claims are so hyperbolized it loses all context. The most targeted brand in South Africa is VW. The most popular brand in SA is VW. What a coincidence.

I was in the same boat as you a few months back, until i drove the Chev Trailblazer. Awsome vehicle, little more punch than the tuna but a great drive overall. VERY VERY Similar to the tuna without the high risk factor of it being hijacked. Has all that you can ask for as well. Go Test drive 1. I love my Trailblazer.

+1

Do yourself a favour and look at the Trailblazer! Much much better than a tuna and more economical by a long way.

Thanks for all the replies. Haven't managed to see anymore vehciles yet, but planning on going this weekend to check out the Suburu, Audi Q3, Kia Sorento or Sportage and now on my list is the Trailblazer, it looks the part I wonder if it is any good.

Trailblazer is fine, but as with the Fortuner, is based on bakkie engineering - fine if that's what you like. :)

I see it hadn't been mentioned but another SUV with true 4x4 capability is the Suzuki Grand Vitara. Should fall within your budget and adds something else that may at least be worth a look.

Some people knock it with out having tried it. Handles pretty well

Car Mag review:

"Trailblazer was widely praised for its on-road dynamism. By virtue of its five-link independent rear suspension, the hefty cab-on-chassis SUV handled the road imperfections with marked composure and even traversed a muddy, rutted dirt track during the photoshoot with aplomb.
Directional stability is acceptable and the steering, although weightier and not as smooth as on most passenger vehicles, is positive in feel. The softly sprung suspension does translate into a propensity to nose-dive under hard braking, but not disconcertingly so. On balance, the test team agreed that the Trailblazer’s ride quality was class-leading."

Trailbailzer may be a very good vehicle but Chev customer service...

I'd go with the Forester, underrated beauty

This is what irritates me about Road Tests in CAR Magazine - they will basically tell you how cr@ppy something is, as in the quote above, and then finish off with "On balance, the test team agreed that the Trailblazer’s ride quality was class-leading."

Too bloody scared to be seen to be criticising one of the local biggies!

I also was a bit confused in the latest issue where they had the "best value SUV" comparative test. The Forester was the only car there that was AWD, but they made out as if it was the least value for money. It was the only 4x4 in the test at a comparable price to the other 4x2s, but CAR said it was expensive! They actually mentioned how expensive the whole Forester range is on the whole. But if you look at the Forester range's prices vs CR-V, RAV etc, it's in line with them.

How come nobody mentioned the BMW X5 or the Nissan Pathfinder.
For the money you prepared to spend you should be able to find great 2nd bargains.
I also like the look of the Mitshu ASX.

The biggest advertisers in the magazine gets the best review. Money talks...
