Hi guys,

I am looking at ordering a fairly large amount of gear (Pro body and 3 Lenses) and am obviously very much tempted by the prices on CameraQuip. Having looked around the usual places (Hello Peter, ODP forums, etc.) and it seems that all feedback has been pretty decent, but would just like to confirm if anybody has dealt with them recently, and what the experience has been like...

looking forward to the response :)

I've used them, not that recently though. Service was good.

Hmmmm I am averse to poorly designed online retail sites, and cameraquip seems to be one of them! Check out cameraland.co.za or orms.co.za for a far better experience.

Hmmmmmmmmm even more worrying is that they use Mack international warranty system i.e. this screams grey import...

LOL, so what, since when is parallel importing a bad thing, and they clearly state they import all their stuff.

nah, look completely agreed, the owners dont deny that it is a grey import (it is even at the bottom of the page and on the FAQ)... I am willing to risk it, with those kind of savings, I can get an extra lens...

more worried about transferring 70+k and not getting the equipment, but so far, all my research seems to indicate that this should not happen with Johan... just wanted to see if anybody here had dealt with Johan/CameraQuip recently, and what the experience was like...

Used them for a Sigma 8-14 lens for my wife, after finding out that nobody in SA had stock, and no ETA's. They were cheaper than the usual guys, and at least able to deliver in a week.

No issues at all, happy customer and will use them again.

Well your other option is to put everything you want in a cart at bh, check the shipping, work out the import costs and see if its worthwhile importing yourself.

lived666, already been through the motions. The only time when BH makes sense is if buying the body and lenses as a kit ($400 discount), but unfortunately, BH does not deliver bodies, and hence cheaper lenses to SA (dont remember the exact error message, but something along the lines of BH is not allowed to distribute bodies overseas).

I have tried the same exercise with Adorama, and found that the price is about the same when taking in to account customs duties at 14% of 110% of the value (works out to about $1400 just on customs duties) and the goods are a little bit too heavy to have delivered with someone (total package weight of 9kg)...

I also use http://www.camcorner.co.za/ to compare prices and they have some great savings on some gear, not all but you can get some good prices on camera bodies and lenses. I used them a few times and they deliver with excellent results everytime. I am in CT and they in Jozi, I see you are that side mic_y, check them out.

I have ordered a K-30 kit from them, paid on Thursday, will see what happens. Compared to importing the exact same kit, the prices are virtually identical. Will update here.

Good luck Bismuth, and congrats on the new kit :)

Please keep us updated on the results :D

Heh, tnks, it's the one with the 18-135 WR lens. I wanted the blue body, but eventually settled for black.

I received my tracking number today, let's see!

so after being too chicken to order on CameraQuip, I now regret it a little bit... Friend ordered a D600 kit and the camera arrived on time at a lot less than it would cost purchasing locally.

Given Bismuth's experience as well as my friends, seems like CameraQuip is indeed legit, and worth it, if you are not too worried about local warranty.

Heh, tracking it was a pain, took a whole friggin' day to move across Charles De Gaulle in Paris, but was quite surprised how quick things moved once it arrived here, had the camera about 5hrs after it landed in Johannesburg.

The insane thing is, there is a local distributor, but they didn't have the combo I wanted, so I decided to risk this (especially with all the camera scams going around), but was indeed worth it. Could have sourced it cheaper via Ebay/Amazon, but they had issues with the fact that I was using a non-US CC.

I would recommend Cameraquip if you can't find the item locally, also if the price difference is large. I have no idea how this Mack Warranty thing works, hopefully I don't get to try it out.

Hey man, ended up going with Digital Experience in Fourways Crossing. Their prices were the same as everywhere else (Orms, ODP) after a little bit of bargaining, and I have generally been quite happy with the service that I get there.

Ok, explain, did you buy from cameraquip or did you import, or a bit of both

I ordered it from Cameraquip, but they imported it. The tracking # they gave me started in Hong Kong.

I saw in another thread you import items yourself so was confused.

But, ahhh, ok, so they drop ship from hong kong direct to you....I assume they covered the vat/duties?
