Question re. Vodacom email addresses

Apologies if it's a stupid question, but do you lose your vodamail email address if you stop using a data sim card? The reason I'm asking is because I just created an email address for my mother - she uses a prepaid data sim. The email is based on the mobile number ([email protected]) with an alias attached ([email protected]).

I assume that should you, for whatever reason, not use that sim anymore (does it lapse if unused for a while?) then the email address also "expires"?

Not a stupid question.

If your sim gets deleted you will lose your email account along with any emails still in it.If you however delete your alias before the sim is deleted you will still be able to use the alias again on another sim providing no one else snaps it up, but the content of the mailbox will be deleted.

Thanks guys, exactly what I thought. Vodamail is not the answer then.

I'm a bit confused as to why people use the Vodamail accounts when theres Gmail.
I'm not hating, I am truely confused.

@ocleroux & VodacomData:
What makes it better than, say, Gmail or makes it more attractive to users?
I have signed up one but never use it because I kinda don't see the point.
 
I do see your point , the service is free with the package after all , you know use don't use kind of thing. Also some may prefer the Domain name as Vodamail in stead of Gmail.

I know I would probably make more use if it had sms notification or something similar when you receive an email. But I guess most cellphone apps which constantly check mail accounts and Blackberry's kinda defeat the purpose of having that.
Perhaps for the segment of the market that does not have internet-capable phones but have internet at home or work (although its probably a very small segment these days)
 
I understand what you saying , though it probably would have been a hit 2 or 3 years ago.
