How to cook the perfect steak:

1. Take the steak out of the packet and leave it on a wire rack in the fridge for up to two days. This will dry out the steak, concentrating the flavor and tenderizing the meat.

2. Remove the steak from the fridge, and let it rest outside for a couple of hours to get it to room temperature.

3. Heat up oil in a cast iron pan until smoking hot (as hot as possible). Fry your steak, turning it every 15 - 20 seconds so the outside stays hot enough for a crust to form, without the inside overcooking. The intense heat will cause the Maillard reaction, where proteins and sugars react to create an amazing, delicious, meaty brown crust.

4. Don't cut the meat if you want to check if it is ready. Instead use a meat thermometer. 45C is rare, 55C is medium, 65C is well done.

5. Let your steak rest for at least 5 minutes. This allows the fibers to cool down and stop contracting, which holds in the moisture and leaves your steak juicy and tender.

How do I copy pictures and videos from my iPhone to a PC (no iPhoto)?

Copying photos from your iPhone to a PC is a different process than using a Mac. Most Mac users simply use built-in iPhoto software to move videos and pictures to the computer.

First plug your iPhone into the PC using the USB cable.

For Windows XP:

1. Navigate to Start -> All Programs -> Accessories -> Scanner and Camera Wizard.
2. When the Select Device window appears choose Apple iPhone and hit OK.
3. Click Next to use the wizard. If you'd rather copy photos manually using Windows Explorer then choose "advanced users only."

Windows Vista:

1. Windows will automatically recognize the iPhone and an AutoPlay window will appear.
2. Select "Import pictures." If you'd rather copy photos manually using Windows Explorer then choose "Open device to view files."

Sometimes Windows will not recognize the iPhone. When using XP you may receive the following error:

The computer cannot detect the scanner or camera.

1. To fix this problem disconnect all USB devices.
2. Right click "My Computer" and select the device manager.
3. If you see an Apple mobile device listed right click and uninstall the driver.
4. Reboot your computer.
5. Reattach the iPhone and now it should recognize the device as a camera.
 
What can I do to make my computer faster?

There are a number of ways you can make your computer faster. These break down into two major categories, software, and hardware.

Software Solutions:

These solutions will improve the performance, but will only get it running as fast as it did when you purchased it.

Defragment your hard drive.
Stop any unnecessary programs from loading when your computer boots. *If you are not comfortable doing this on your own, have a professional take care of this for you.
Hardware Solutions:

If you would like to increase the speed of your computer, the easiest method is to add RAM (memory) to your computer. Adding RAM can cause a noticeable improvement in the performance of your computer. The type of RAM your computer takes will depend on the age of your computer. RAM prices have dropped significantly in the past few years, making this one of the most easily justified upgrades on most systems.
Replacing your hard drive is another way to increase the performance of your system. *The primary purpose of replacing your hard drive is usually to add storage space. New hard drives are larger, and faster than old hard drives.
If you are looking for more performance than RAM alone can add, you are looking at a major overhaul. To substantially increase the speed of your computer, you will need a new processor. As technology goes, new processors require new motherboards, new RAM, and usually a new video card. This is OK, because all of these other new parts will also improve the performance.
This kind of upgrade is not always worth it. You will still have some old parts on your computer, and sometimes you are better off just replacing the whole computer.

Sometimes stains or marks are made worse by the "treatment".... unless you do some research / asking around.

I recently rented a car at the coast and landed up with salt marks on the seat due to driving with wet costume. Obviously not acceptable to the rental company, so I asked around for a possible solution. My brother-in-law immediately said I should use soda water (he got it as a tip from an air steward friend).

So proceeded to treat mark with cloth and Soda Water - mark disappeared !!

I still need to try it on other upholstery marks in my own vehicles......
 
There are many Windows 8 users who are complaining about various restart and shutdown issues. Many times their Windows 8 computers restart themselves as soon as the login screen appears. Sometimes their computer systems hang while rebooting or shutting down the system.

Most of the times these kind of issues are related with the new "Hybrid Shutdown" feature introduced in Windows 8. Hybrid shutdown feature of Windows 8 decreases the total startup time by hibernating the kernel session instead of closing it which reduces the overall Windows loading time because resuming from hibernated system session is very less work compared to a full system initialization.

But this new feature is causing problems to some computer systems and if you are also facing reboot or shutdown problems in Windows 8, you can fix it by disabling this new hybrid shutdown feature and doing a complete shutdown.

Just follow these simple steps:

1. If you are on new Start Screen, type power and Windows will automatically search for the term and will show you the results.

If you are on Desktop, move your cursor to top-right corner of screen to access new Charms Bar. Now click on Search option and type power in search box.

2. Now click on Settings link given in right-sidebar of search results page and then click on "Change what the power buttons do" link given in the search results as shown in following screenshot:



3. It'll open Power Options window. You can alternatively open the same window by typing powercfg.cpl in RUN dialog box and press Enter and then click on the "Choose what the power buttons do" link given in left sidebar.

Now scroll down to bottom and you'll see "Turn on fast startup (recommended)" option given in Shutdown settings section as shown in following screenshot:



4. Disable the option by unchecking the checkbox and then click on "Save Changes" button.

PS: If the option is not shown or greyed out, scroll up and click on "Change settings that are currently unavailable" link.

5. That's it. Restart your system and your reboot or shutdown problems should get fixed in Windows 8.

NOTE: If the above solution doesn't fix your problem, you can try to execute following command in Command Prompt. Open Command Prompt as Administrator by right-click on the bottom-left corner and select the same option from the Win+X menu:

bcdedit /set disabledynamictick yes

The above mentioned command used to fix a very annoying freezing issue found in Windows 8 Release Preview build. According to Microsoft the issue was fixed in Windows 8 RTM but if you are still facing the issue, you can try the command.
 
Viewing a Password hidden in asterisks.

Problem: How to view a password hidden in asterisks or dots.
Solution: Click where the password has been typed, then right click and select "Inspect element"(Chrome and Firefox) and since the html code is not encrypted you can edit where it says <input type="password"...> to <input type="text"...> after doing this click on an empty space in the console and close.

There are lots of different ways mentioned on the web but the following worked the best for me.
Create a paste of vinegar and baking soda - note it should be a paste - not too runny and not too dry.
Then take a sponge of cloth and apply it to the areas required - glass, tiles grout etc.
Then wait approximately 1/2 an hour and rinse off.
You can apply to severe areas more than once.
Additionally you could use a scrubbing brush to work in the paste to badly affected areas such as grout lines.
