Please confirm, according to the 8ta contact centre, you can only use the data bundles/packages when on the 8ta network, once out of coverage, and roaming of MTN, you are charged normal out of bundle rates (although you would still have data available).

Can anyone confirm this or was the agent talking hogwash?

you wont be able to roam on mtn iirc

I would hope that one isn't charged at some other rate on top of your fixed monthly fee whilst you still have data left when you cant access an 8ta tower....

The Internet 5 Promo (postpaid) and 2GIG + 1GIG Promo (prepaid) only works on the 8ta network.
It does not roam at all. So if you do not have coverage, then the service will not work.
