Not necessarily but there is a correlation for team sports (look at how many South American countries are in the top 20 or so of the FIFA rankings). The country's sports bodies have to be able to translate that passion and love of the game into performance at the national level (something we're less and less able to do in rugby and have rarely managed in soccer).

The point of the comparison I made was to show you why comparing NZ and SA is inaccurate. The amount of funding, participation, general attention given to soccer in NZ would be tiny compared to here.

Added to the fact that New Zealand has a very small population that punches above it's weight on the rugby field because they are so obsessed with it. Not surprised their Soccer team is ranked so given their population size.

You always get people asking "look at Bafana's racial composition" whenever the quota issue in the previously white codes is brought up. It is an ignorant observations of course but does happen. What it does point to is that there is either a large majority or vocal minority wishing for white teams to remain white and any attempt at balancing even if merit based will be dismissed as quota. We already see it. All of the Protea players of colour who turned out to be good enough on merit started out being dismissed as quota based.

Funny you should mention the Americans.

If their sprint teams represented their demographics, it would be a mostly white team. According to your logic, this would be fair.

But then isn't that a perfect argument against quotas. If you didn't have them you wouldn't have to doubt them in the first place.

In any case, is there any evidence to suggest that the 'quota' players who have proven to be successful would not have been selected had there not been quotas?

It's hard to prove players are being overlooked on the basis of their melanin content. My opinion is there are entrenched mindsets that may be actively working against the advanced of players of colour. The officials will never do it overtly but the fans certainly show it.

I would agree there is an entrenched mindset in many cases, but would you not agree that entrenched mindset is there largely because of all the overt political meddling with regards to colour in sport?

Then they thought, well maybe we should let these guys run and get some medals out of them.
