"Cape Town - Former All Blacks and Cats Super Rugby coach, Laurie Mains, has slammed South Africa's emphasis on quotas in rugby, saying that the Springboks' best days are behind them.

In an interview with foxsports.co.au, Mains did not hold back.

Mains believes that the Springboks' days of being top competitors on the international stage are over and that the quota system is the main reason why.

New Bok coach Allister Coetzee has been told that half of his squad must be made up of players of colour by the 2019 World Cup.

Mains, the All Blacks coach at the 1995 Rugby World Cup, was in charge of the Cats in Super Rugby for two years in 2000 and 2001.

"When I coached over there I could see the reason for it (a quota system)," Mains said.

"It was a genuine attempt to create opportunities for the black and coloured players and I respected that, because there hadn’t been big numbers of them.

"But heavens above, that’s 15 years ago."

Mains believes that the current Bok side should be picked on merit alone and that, in his mind, all players in South Africa have had an equal chance to develop over the past 15-18 years.

Mains' prediction for the future of the Springboks was equally hard-hitting.

"For my money they’re gone, with racially selecting teams, they’re not going to cut it," Mains said.

"With the quota system they have, I think the days of them being top competitors are over."

The Springboks are next in action when the Rugby Championship begins on August 20." - NEWS24.COM

Henry and Hansen secretly don't agree with this quota system either I believe.

Graham Henry said:
"What was alarming for me in the Bok loss to the Irish was the total lack of passion and commitment for the jersey,” Henry wrote.

“In my time as All Black coach we played against Bok teams that we knew didn't have the talent and skills of us, but by g.., you knew you were in for an absolute war. That fire and pride seems to be dying slowly and I am struggling to understand why. A once feared opponent and now they are struggling to compete with top tier nations..."

Hansen was slightly more direct with his words than Henry.

Steve Hansen said:
Hansen responded by saying: “Look, I wouldn’t, but the facts are and the case of the matter is that they (South Africa) have to select their side differently to everybody else.

“Whether you or everyone else has to say that those guys provide the quota, I just don’t know enough about it.

“All I know is that they have a quota they have to pick, which is different for me because I don’t have to do that. I just pick the best players and I think that is the way any sport team should be picked.

“I also don’t want to go in too deep with that, otherwise I will be in trouble with everybody. So, it’s best to sidestep the issue,” he added.

The rot has already started. Heavy-handed transformation will just accelerate it.

Losses to Japan and Argentina last year and a narrow series victory over a weakened Irish side at home are clear indication that the Boks are in bad shape.

but the Lions beat the Crusaders?

I don't understand this.

To elaborate on my above statement;

The Stormers and Sharks (who provide the core of the Bok side at the moment) lost 60 - 21 and 41 - 0 respectively against NZ opposition. Let us not even talk about the Cheetahs and Kings.

The Lions are the lone shining light in SA rugby at the moment. The rest of it is sick.

Would you be happy with an all-white team?

Was Jake White's World Cup-winning side all-white?

Merit does not mean all-white. It simply means selecting the best players available and not selecting players in order to meet some rubbish political agenda.

Quotas are an insult to the genuinely talented black players in the country.

What is going to happen eventually is the players who cannot get into the team because they are white are simply going to be given citizenship to other countries. Just like Grant Elliott, who hammered the final nail into South Africa's coffin in 2015

You are going to see white South Africans in foreign colours beating a quota side consisting of mainly black players. Tell me what a racist would think of such a notion?

Now listen here, Saturday was a very long day and by the time the game started I was halfway smashed already.

I only saw 2 black guys in blue jerseys for a while.

Okay okay. It would appear that you can't count when you have been drinking.
