R 69 for Unlimited email and Internet

RPM - using the 8310 as a modem by connecting to a "different" APN does not currently seem to be an option as from what i have been told by 155 as the new encryption does not seem to allow any other authentications - they are coming back to me on this however but i am not hopeful.

If anyone has a 8310 working as a modem i would be very keen to hear about it. Even if i have to pay on the R2/MB APN - i just want the thing to work when i need it to.
I have a Pearl that I've just now managed to get working as a modem. All you to do is use the internet apn instead of the blackberry one - this was all done on the laptop not the phone.

Thanks but you mean by adding this <at+cgdcont=1,"IP","internet"> to the modem "Extra initialization commands"?
Already tried that, sadly it does not work with the 8310 :(
BTW what "phone number" are you using?
*99# or *9***4# etc?

afaik its *99# and a username/pwd of guest/guest

YMMV as I am doing this from a mac.

My script is different but from what I can tell yes, it does use that string.

*99# seems to work well with MTN [@v3g - from what I have read], but I have seen forumites posting about needing to use *99***# in MyBroadband's Vodacom forum, so maybe try *99***# instead.

nope that ain't working, i think the 8310 is different somehow :(
@ IC - tried *99***4#, *99***1# etc. no luck.
Hopefully rpm/V3G/Vodacom will have some answers tomorrow but i am starting to think that currently the 8310 can not be used as a modem due to the APN encryption issues

And if you remove the digits I have highlighted?

BTW, what those highlighted digits mean to a phone being used as a modem attached to a PC, is use the phones connection settings profile in slot x, where x is a number, so you're actually telling your phone to obtain the connection settings from the phone's profile settings in slot 4 and then later from slot 1, now depending on the phone, it might ignore or override the modem init string passed by the PC, which is not what you want.

Maybe this can help: http://www.vodacom.co.za/services/blackberry/setup_your_blackberry.jsp

I think I can predict a backlash from Prometheus about a lack of Data Bundle Rollover being theft.
What's the use anyway? Anyway how can taking what is offered as a service and you already paid for be theft when they still make a bundle so to speak.
I'd be kinda miffed about this if I was a Opera Mini fan.
Does it run on the BB?
If it runs Java.

Why can't everyone just make devices like the Nokias where you just set the apn on the phone and can then use it over bluetooth if you don't have connection software.

From little bits of information it looks like the encryption is just for email over the application layer and not "end-to-end" as RIM claims. Even if there is strong encryption used to authenticate it still has to be communicated and so can be emulated. Also how do browsers usually authenthicate. ;) An interesting read from https://forum.defcon.org/showthread.php?t=5142 highlighting its flaws and that though it may be hard any Berry can theoretically be cracked and the information retrieved.

AFAIK most if not all phones that support at least GPRS, also support specifying the connection settings to use from the phone or SIM card, embedded in the number to dial string, however one has the alternative option of letting a PC specify those settings in a modem init string, but specifying settings using both methods is not a good idea - rather use one method or the other.

PS: using Bluetooth 1.x for an HSDPA connection is not a good idea as Bluetooth 1.x typically will not match the maximum transfer rate of the HSDPA connection, none of which has anything to do with Blackberry phones.

All right. Now that the questions have been cleared up, can a Blackberry owner let us know what the native Internet Browser is like, how it handles downloads, etc?

in a word ****. wish i could get opera mini 4 beta to work.

The browser isnt too bad - in many ways reminiscent of opera mini.

Dont know about downloads but I can see how it would probably be a pain trying to download anything substantial.

With only max EDGE on the BBs downloading even big emails is going to be a real pain. Also there is no EDGE coverage here so using only GPRS is going to be much worse.

I had to set up a Motorola for someone. Problem was that while you can use bluetooth to connect there is no way to tell it which settings to use, even specifying the apn doesn't work. I would have been more than happy to get a bluetooth connection going which would have been fast enough even for Vodacom's hsdpa that doesn't reach the 1Mbps of bluetooth. In the end I had to search the depths for the Moto sw they want to sell. The apn is set in a proprietary manner and if you want to change it you have to run the setup program again that installs the software.

The way I see it the only network they work great on is the one that doesn't offer them - Cell C.
