Also why they do not resell bandwidth for ADSL subscribers via ISP's is beyond me.
Do they feel that they cannot handle it?
Neotel rep gave a vague answer to that question some time ago, saying that "These things take time".
Wonder if its been a 100 days yet? :rolleyes:

What is the point of having Neotel and getting these 1000 free minutes if nobody you know has Neotel. Naaah...they'll have to do better than R99 over a 24 month contract. How about R49 per month service fee with no contract and reduced pricing across all networks therefore undercutting Telkom - now that's what I call competition.

Oh, wait, I can't change to Neotel entirely. Much prefer ADSL than any other current technology available in SA.

Was just about to say the same thing. The cellphone operators already have 80% of the population covered for voice communication.
If they think this is "hitting the nail on the head" then i dunno.

Maybe we just have to resign to the fact that the only mass beneficiary of Neotel will be the large businesses and corporations who need dedicated networks

I totally disagree, those rates are perfect for the od download or usage. Prepaid Webafrica is R70. So there's a R10 difference but at least vodacom or MTN rates of R289 per GB. This is wireless you know.

I was comparing apples with apples. I was comparing data rates exclusive of everything else. ADSL = on average R70 per GB. This works out to on average R81.92 per GB. As such, they are not cheaper than adsl. That is the point I was making.

So please try read a bit more carefully before jumping on your high horse mmmkay.

How can you compare a bundle rate with an out-of-bundle rate. come on. If you read the article about mobile data prices which included neotel's rates, you'd see their rates. I'm not Neotel's biggest fan but let's try to be fair.

All I'm saying, is that they could have a quicker startup by partnering in the initial phase, and then switch over to their own infrastructure as they roll it out. In the process VC could get rid of their Telkom dependency.

I'm not clear if you still have to sign a contract but my understanding is if your buy the device, you can cancel with no penalty.

I'm liking this package. It's a great way to get people signed up. I won't be cancelling my adsl line but I'm considering signing up for this. But it's not really targeted at me.

My sister (entry level user) is using virgin mobile (edge) with her laptop and cellphone. This seems perfect for her. Low monthly cost, telephone and internet. attractive option.

R100 per month is cheaper than telkom's residential line rental. And their call rates are cheaper too.
 
The way I read it is that the first package is not a 24 month contract its' month-to-month, but with the R599 up front... now if your stay connected for 24 months, well then the R25 credits you get monthly actually paid off your device fee....

The call rates are great and I'm switching as soon as MNP is available, if there's some good uptake expect telkom to compete. Neotel needs to generate incoming traffic to offset the Telkom expense of outgoing.

The way I read it is that you will pay R99 per month, but, depending on your calls and data, there will be a discount of up to R25 per month - provided you spend enough.

Could not find the fine print on Neotel's website yet.
 
I think for the little granny at home who just needs a landline so her grandkids can call her when they need to, this would work out ok but other than that i dont think its that great for the company who for so long was touted as our saviour.

I realise it is going to take them some time to get their network etc in order, but they dont seem to be listening to anyone in the technical community at all. they continue coming up with packages that make sense to a small little niche market. where are the data only packages, where is the ethernet port. these questions have been asked many times in the past and all we have had so far is a vague commitment to some time in the future a ethernet device will be available.

to me thats shocking and one of the main reasons why i am a bit disillusioned by them.
 
I dont have neotel coverage like the rest of south africa but i called them a while back and asked if i can use my current cordless phone(small cellphone type) with their voice service and the guy replied no but the neotel device is already a cordless phone... At that point i bust out laughing speewing my coffee on my monitor & keyboard.
Imagine walking around your house or office with that thing, "uuu yeah yeah i just have to go check if i have stock in the store room, you can stay on the line i have the new neotel phonebook size phone no problem!"
 
You will only get a Neoconnect Lite device with this service. :( pass

And no, I will not be able to connect my alarm to it.
 
Ummm to all those persons who are bitching and moaning like kids...read the press release carefully!

The product is targetted @ those that do not have a home phone i.o.w. the lower income bracket and mobile pre-paid customers...
If you look @ the fact that there are TWO packages it will make sense:

Package 1: you can purchase the device out right @ R599, pay a monthly service fee of R99 + usage. There is a MONTH-to-MONTH contract - so no hidden agenda. The package is PRIMARILY for voice customers but also give them the option to introduce them to BASIC data / internet and email. In addition, if you use R25 of data / sms / voice you get a discount.

Package 2:you do not purchase the device upfront but pay for it over a 24 month period + service and usage charges.

Looking @ these facts, these packages are nto for heavy data users and from all the stuff on the ethernet device thread there seems to be another launch later this month or next month.

Seriously though stop bashing a baby...!
