R1,400 Gobii Android tablet from Kalahari

Anybody know if these tablets have access to the Google Play store? There is just some cryptic mention of "one of the popular Android app stores available on the web" on the Kalahari page, so I'm guessing the answer is "no".
Also, can anybody tell me which product this is a rebranding of?

It's an Android tablet. It has to have access to the play store.

All good and well - but where are the 10" Chinese Tablets?
Them HeroII and the like are nice, but you don't find them locally that much.
I don't mind buying from DX or similar Chinese sites, its the warranty support that has me relenting on purchasing.

As mentioned, if it got Android it means you even got access to the Amazon/Kindle store too.

Unfortunately, no.

The Android operating system is open source, which means that any device manufacturer is free to use Android on its devices. However, the Google Play app is only made available to devices that pass Google’s compatibility requirements. Manufacturers must obtain a license from Google in order to install the Google Play Store app on their devices.

That is one of the reasons you need to be careful of cheap tablets.
The Gobii device is not listed as a supported device, I see, so that answers the first part of my question.
But if the device it is based on is compatible, it may be possible to load Google Play using a hack or patch.

The manufacturer has to pay Google for access to the Play store (and other Google apps). If they don't, then they don't get access to the Play store.

I see there are two Gobii 7 inch devices.
The original unit does not have Wifi or 3G - you can only connect via USB.
Also it's display is a measly 800x480 pixels.
The new unit has Wifi and an IPS 1280x800 pixel display.

For R1399 it's a bargain compared to the other Android tablets in the market like the MSI Enjoy 7 Plus or Asus range.
I just wonder if the Google Play store has been disabled or not because most of these eReaders have been crippled to stop you using the device to purchase and read competitor's eBooks.

The first device is not an Android tablet. It is an e-reader with LCD display, hence the low resolution.

I am now pretty sure that this tablet does not access the Google Play Store since it is not listed under Gobii on the list of supported devices. I do agree that the price is very good for a quad core tablet, that's why I'm trying to figure out what it is called originally, to see if you can get the Play Store working on it.

Thanks for the head up! Wouldn't waste my time on a fong kong table I have never heard from in life.
Will wait until there is a clearance of SamSung tablets or something to come out

I think it is a re-branded WayteQ xTAB-70qci http://www.wayteq.eu/en/xtab70qci
All the hardware seems to match including the mass of 278 grams and the dimensions.
The only thing that doesn't match is the CPU clock speed but that could just mean that the one Kalahari has is slightly under clocked.

I'd give them a chance, was plenty surprised by the Novo Crystal I got my wife in February.

I think you hit it spot on, thank you. I compared some pictures of the two and it seems to be identical apart from the branding.

Good luck on finding info about the device - everything seems to be on Hungarian forums. :)

Well even if you can't access the play store, surely you can install apps if you got the .APK from the web? There's quite a few apps (Amazon's Apps especially) that are available for download directly from the website.

There's also alternative "app stores" that one can download and install. Samsung for example have their own app store , Amazon got theirs etc (which you must install without going through Google Play). There's even a porn app store....

There was a time where Google Earth wasn't available in the SA App store (don't ask me why), and that's how i got it on my devices...direct download the app via the browser from a site that had the files. There's apps that Google ban (for obvious reasons), like the one which can download Youtube cliips , also, just find the website and install it.

True. If you are happy with alternative app stores and not having Google Play, the device does seem to be well spec'd for its price and is probably worth considering.

my kindle fire is not on the list. I had to root it but I have play store. apparently amazon store is just a subset of play store. either the list is not complete or there are ways and means to get access.

There are ways and means. There are ways and means of finding any series you want on the internet for free. Equally legal.

It's not a "subset" , it's an alternative store. Granted, Google Play will most likely have more apps, but i have found sometimes there's apps on the Amazon store not on Google Play too. I have 3 stores on my Samsung S3, Google Play,Amazon and Samsung's own store. Each have their own pricing and specials (Amazon have a free app per day for example).

So yes, Amazon by default brand their Kindle Fire with their own store (for obvious reasons) and they lock it down to prevent you from installing other stores (like Google Play). However i think that is just corporate politics (amazon obviously makes money if you buy via their store) . A Chinese or android device not affiliated with a specific store , i would imagine would be "open" to install whatever app store you want.

So has anybody purchased one of these yet? What's it like?
