I've got the Q9450 and it is splendid. overclocked it to 3.5GHz with no temperature increase. if I had better memory (1066 at least) I will be able to get it 2 4GHz (3.8 at least).

If you want to get quad core go for the cheaper Q6600 that will be overclock minimum to 2.8GHz stock cooling (correct me if I'm wrong please)

You're right..but he said he doesn't really need it for gaming. For R10K you could buy 2 lappies...imagine the amount of student p2p you could store then :)

he could buy one of those Lenovo laptops that have 2 hdd slots, so then he could get 2 250gig hdd's...

and why does he need 500gig's of data???? is he planning for his pirating spree?
 
I imagine a good first homework "assignment" would be a script to monitor for new torrents of popular stuff and automagically add them to task list that need to retrieve said torrents. Now his only problem is caps :D
 
From what I read, what was pointed out was hard drive space and a good graphics card. No mention of specific computing power etc.

All I'm saying is that most people don't consider laptops to be decent - rather only for mobile use. I believe that to be a fallacy. These days for R10 000, you can get a very decent spec laptop as Dominic's needs require.

If you are a regular gamer then yes a desktop is far better. But if you are a student, remembering my student days, a laptop provides a lot more benefits.(as long as it does not get legs and take a walk which I believe is prevalent on campus nowadays :-( )
 
10k cannot get you a laptop that can play games though. Sure good fast laptop but as for gaming 10k won't get you close to gaming.
 
Hehe sorry okes, sort of forget that I posted this thread.

Laptop/desktop - my dad actually wants me to get a desktop because he doesn't believe a laptop is needed at UCT (which is sort of correct, I'll only use my external HDD for... ;) ). Not doing anything too graphical, probably some Maths & Statistics and of course those university projects.

well, what are you studying then?
 
Business Science, 1st year has quite a wide variety of subjects. (Economics, Maths, Statistics, Informatics (sort of IT I think), Business Law, Business and Financial Accounting)

ok, well in that case, it looks like you don't really need a monster cpu, so a dual core might serve you well :D.

if you were doing engineering or something along those lines, then you'd need a powerful cpu to handle some of the programs used
 
Also think of investing in a good calculator. I know you may not get a decent calculator into the exam hall, but it could really help you later in life as well. So I guess I'm saying spend like 5 or 6K on the PC and invest in a good calculator with some of the left over money.

I am still getting some miles out of my old HP 48G - what a really cool piece of equipment.
 
I am desperately trying to find a 48G. Any idea where I can find one...or any chance of you selling?
 
If you want to get good grades with your studies i'd suggest getting an old Pentium 2. anything newer and you're only gonna play games!

No 4870 for you!

Yea - I thought a Quad at least. I got my PC about 6 months ago for R9,000.00 and it was a Core 2 Quad, 4GB RAM, 500GB HDD, Asus P5QC board and a small graphics card (I'm not a gamer).

I thought R10,000.00 would give you something pretty decent!
