Got a message from MTN today apologising for any inconvenience caused etc. They claim that they are working on fixing the problem. The good news is that they finally admit publicly on Facebook that they are having a problem. The bad news is that they don't give any sort of target date for this problem to be fixed. This could mean that they will probably try to get me to pay anyway while they are "fixing" the problem.

I guess I will never understand why MTN never takes responsibility for their own stuff-ups, but instead expect their poor customers to pay for it.

don't even contemplate it. I would also monitor your credit record whilst this is being resolved, the last thing you want is for this to get resolved and the listed as a slow payer on your credit profile.

You should probably cancel they debit order and eft what you actually used until resolved. These companies do have a habit of whacking you with the full amount and claim a different department is sorting you out.

I think by now everyone on MyBB has realized, Vodacom, MTN and contracts is the worst possible thing you can do.

Once our last 24 month contract *which was gotten out of desperation* expires in like 5 months, it's good riddance cellphone contract, forever!

I have no intention of paying. I just know that their standard way of operating is to pay now, sort out later. I've been with MTN for 16 years or more but this will be my final contract with them.

Ugh! Sorry to hear dude.

But yes, don't pay them a damn cent until they give you a specific break down of how you supposedly used that amount of data.

I am on the same thing now... prepaid from now on. This contract I have expires in 4 months' time.
If I want a new phone, I will go and buy it cash.

Any news to report Vinodh?

Got a reply from MTN on hellopeter. They wrote some cut and paste apology about "inconvenience caused" blah blah and that they passed a credit on my account to ensure that I only get billed for the correct amount and not the R14000. However, it still shows as the full amount on my unbilled balance.

I have preached before on MTN service record. Its just plain bad. Afrihost came close to making me get an MTN line. But after this, they can be sure that i will not set foot to buy or get contract from Mtn.
Stay away from.MTN
But i promise to buy any good prepaid phone from them and burn the sim soonest. Just to make sure they cant bill me somehow for a prepaid.

Get MyBroadband to write an article on service from rhe cellular service providers. Maybe pm RPM and ask him about it

Remember on Apple devices there is a seperate APN at the bottom of that screen when creating a tether hotspot. If you don't set that, you're not using Afrihost when making a wifi spot.

I wonder if this is what happened to me - I got the Afrihost 5GB on my MTN contract, and changed my APN to "afrihost". I thought I was good to go. But towards the end of last month I saw my MTN bill had jumped from the normal R 350.00, to R1850.00.

I had used my iPhone with MTN and afrihost for tethering the supposed "Afrihost" data to my iPad. But now it looks like while I was tethering, I was actually being charged by MTN at R 2.00 per Mb (R 2000.00 per Gb!), all the while thinking I was on the Afrihost 5GB bundle. Only now, do I see that there is a separate APN for tethering...Afrihost never told me to change the tethering APN also..grrrr
To be honest I never knew a tethering APN existed - I thought once the cellular data APN was set, then that is what is used to pipe all data...wether for tethering or not

I can finally say that this nightmare with MTN is over. They removed the R14000 error amount yesterday and my account is back to normal. Thank you to everyone here that gave me advice on what to do to fight these morons.

No. That amount was only on my un-billed balance. That debit order still has to run. So no blacklist for me. For now. You never know with MTN. Just when you are walking by minding your own business...BAM! in the nuts!
