I just got off the line with MTN and asked them how is it possible to have a limit of R3300 and still be allowed to go to R14000? They said that it was possible that I was close to my limit and must have started a data stream that continued until I used up almost R11000 worth of data. I told them that makes not sense that I could have used that much today but they refuse to listen. They keep saying that I must wait till the 7th before anything can be done.

Since an agreement was in place for R3300 limit, then MTN have breached the agreement. You could always contact the Consumer Affairs office (ombudsman) on 0860 4288634 (Gauteng office) or consumer@gauteng.gov.za if MTN refuses to hold to the agreement.

Hiya
I just read most of the posts, I noticed you said you still had Airtime - so if your Afrihost APN went off and now from what i understand on MTN - if you used up all your MTN data, you would then use up your allocated Airtime first then you would go in to extra billing - so it must be some billing error if you still have airtime but being charged for Data.

Good luck dude MTN royally sucks in this regard.

Make sure, I think your usage is closer to 20GB, that 165MB was probably the last connection you made...
The bill was already close to R14k before the last connection, if not then you have nothing to worry about.

Agreed, they must stop you at your credit limit... MTN just try to make it sound like a big deal, they can't, it's technologically out of reach of human kind for at least another century.
However, why can't they block people with a debit order from going over their credit limit, but can somehow very efficiently block prepaid users from using more data than they have paid for?

Is there no way to have data disabled from MTN? ie only get voice and sms from MTN unless you call and ask for the APN to be enabled for you sim. Then you can use Afrihost and if for some reason the APN does change back, the MTN APN will be disabled.

I went to MTN today in Fairlands. They initially spun me the same story about waiting till the 7th. I told them that i'm not leaving until I get a proper answer. The consultant called two supervisors that confirmed that there is a problem that has already affected other MTN customers. They connected my phone back to the network and assured me that they will have this resolved by tomorrow latest. Needless to say, I don't believe them at all. I will visit them again on Friday if this is not sorted out. I will then resort to legal action since I have no confidence in MTN's willingness to help me. It seems as if they just want me to keep quiet and pay.

Being an MTN customer myself, with multiple contracts, I feel entitled to comment! If MTN 14th Ave sort you out, you must pursue this further. Their bully tactics and total lack of TCF will be a wonderful court case. Treating Customers Fairly is a corporate practice that is being rolled out as we speak. For them to make statements like "wait until after the 7th" or "they are powerless to help you" is totally against TCF and consumer fairness.

Please do keep us updated. If MTN don't make a public apology to you, I think they will lose many mybb customers who empathise with your situation.

I checked and according to MTN Active, my total data usage for the current billing period (from the 8th of this month till yesterday) is around 600 megabytes. The R14000 issue only happened yesterday as a once off.

How so though? Please take a look at my other posts in this thread - we have notifications setup to avoid OOB and other billing on the account.

Is the notifications on by default?

Didn't you say somewhere else that you must enable it?

MTN's Facebook page has lots of people complaining about this exact same problem I have. One person is being billed R130,000. The consultant at MTN told me today that one customer was being billed R200,000. What's really pathetic is that at no time is MTN making a statement that there is a problem and that they are looking into it. They are just taking down people's details and not replying.

I think you are wrong. When you go into the APN settings and press menu, there should be an option to delete the APN

If you buy the phone from mtn, the apn is built in and cannot be deleted

Edit: I stand corrected
