R14000 usage

MTN's Facebook page has lots of people complaining about this exact same problem I have. One person is being billed R130,000. The consultant at MTN told me today that one customer was being billed R200,000. What's really pathetic is that at no time is MTN making a statement that there is a problem and that they are looking into it. They are just taking down people's details and not replying.

Ok, so their billing system is fubar again.

What really annoys me, is that when you called them, they just immediately assume you're wrong and guilty, told you to first pay and ask questions later.

I used to be a MTN customer eons ago, and see nothing has changed in all these years - just horrible and frustrating to deal with.

Someone should let a MyBroadband writer know. If this is happening to a lot of people then it would make for a great front page story!

I wonder how many of these prisoners, sorry customers, have paid MTN those outrageous bills for fearing that they would get cut off?

Shocking isn't it? I will never go back to a company that troubleshoots customer complaints like they do. Pathetic really.

It is, but that's how MTN operates.

And the reason why I left them years ago.

Sorry to hear this OP :cry: hope they sort it out!!

OT a bit: Just a heads-up Guys, Phone MTN and request that they disable the default APN (mymtn/internet) from your account...I did this, luckily so.

As a test I changed the APN from Afrihost to mymtn on the iphone, just to check if data would be used...tried to load a website, the phone informed me "could not activate cellular data network''....happy with that result, I then changed APN back to Afrihost (made sure), after trying to access the network the phone still informed me "could not activate cellular data network''. I tried a soft network reset didn't work, reboot didn't work, phoned MTN they said my Afrihost APN was live and the Mymtn APN was still disabled. Checked phone again - definitely had the Afrihost APN set, still no network.

I then did a hard reset of the network setting, changed the APN from default mymtn to Afrihost and it worked again.

So, despite seeing the afrihost APN in the settings the phone was attempting to invoke the SIM embedded mymtn APN which was at the time invisible to me - luckily this APN is disabled - I would otherwise not have known and could have had a nasty OOB wound all the while thinking I'm on the Afrihost APN.

Client-zone and *141# are your friends.

But that says 168MB? Where did 6GB come from?

Had the same problem a few years ago had an issue with their billing data center. Had to pay the 2K before they sorted it out. Was credited on my mtn account and for several months did not need to pay my account.
The unfair part on their side is they wont do anything unless the account is paid. Good luck & take notes of every call & person you speak to. Its much easier to get it sorted when you have a record of all your correspondence.

Remember on Apple devices there is a seperate APN at the bottom of that screen when creating a tether hotspot. If you don't set that, you're not using Afrihost when making a wifi spot.

Yeah, I know :)

But I wasn't going to post two screenshots... just wanted to show droidboy (kingrob) ;)

Anyway. Good luck @vinodh

I hope you get it sorted!

Hahaha.... droidboy!! :D

Oh dear, I had to wipe the tears from my eyes!

Thanks for the laughs! :)

Even though MTN told me that they would contact me by today latest to give me feedback on how they will fix this problem, they haven't. I phoned them earlier today and they told me that they are experiencing problems and will have feedback later today. Still no answer.

Shyte Vinodh, hope you get this sorted out soon.

OK this just made up my mind. I'm going pre-paid and most likely port !!

Luckily my contract is over (actually for over a year now)

I decided to keep my package and pay the odd R130 for airtime and sms to save all my accumulated airtime (which I never used BTW), but it seems really dangerous now by the looks of things to keep it.

The last time I upgraded (renewed) at an MTN SP store, the lady that helped me was constantly sms'ing her friends with her personal cellphone on her lap whilst typing my info into the system.. Shows the service level of MTN !!

Sorry Afrihost, I have to cancel my APN , unless I can hook it up with prepaid which I doubt.

To vinodh, good luck and to all the others who had this distasteful experience.

I don't know how you can resolve this issue, but I do know how you can prevent in in the future: go prepaid. Coincidentally, tomorrow should be the last day of my contract with MTN, then I'll be prepaid and switch to a different network.

I still have the 3g uncapped account with them until June 2014. but going over to ADSL in april and never getting an MTN Data contract again.
