R240 Android tablet unveiled

If we could get this for anything less than R1000 I'd be surprised... and I'd be wanting to get my hands on a few of them tbh...

Even at double that price, the implications are massive. A parent (especially from poorer backgrounds) can buy a subsidised (or secondhand) tablet for less than R500 .. which means .. no cost for books, the government can subsidize digital textbooks in underprivileged areas .. MUCH less paper wastage .. instant updates and at the same time .. immediate access for the whole nation to things like the internet and information .. Telkom better get their networks ready ... cause this could change the world .. never mind just SA ..

I say go for it .. a tablet under R500 is 100000% better than a child with no textbooks or internet access .. finally the government will have no more excuses to educate the nation.

With that smartphone for under R500, I actually believe this. R500 and I'd get one just for the ebooks! If it runs andriod, even better!

Great post and really a way for us to go forward.

I'd certainly want one of these for e-books.
Let's hope it that it delivers and we'll see some on our shores.

I wouldn't touch it - it will more than likely have the quality and reliability of India's cars like the Mahindra etc

No, thanks, not for me. I would rather pay the extra money and get a proper device. Like the Afrikaaners say, goedkoop is deurkoop.

You are missing the point, it is not meant to be a replacment for your fancy gadgets, it is a low cost tool aimed at educational use.

If you read the posts before you, a device like this would open up all kinds of avenues like home automation on the cheap etc.

Hmmm, interesting. Valid article that provides some logical based insight and investigation. Does this then mean that MyBB is also gullible, shameless and lazy to report this story with even the slightest hint of skepticism? RPM?
Actually, Mike has a point in that article. I recall the simputer too... never happened. How indeed can one manufacture a complete tablet for $35 when the touch screen alone costs that much. And indeed, who can compete with the Chinese on manufacturing costs - certainly not India... and since they aren't manufacturing touch screens in country, they have to buy them from the Chinese which means their scam is dead in the water.

Yip, we are third world.... rainbow colors or not....

While we can't stop frating over past wrongs whilst the "leaders" use and abuse, the other third worlds are moving upwards.

Strange how the single race countries, albeit being third world, is advancing at a much greater pace than us ...
I take it you have never being to a real 3rd world country? You should travel :D

I want one of these tablets for ebooks :D

One thing we have to bear in mind here - is that this is meant to be made available to Indian students.
There's no mention of it being shipped out of India - from what I gather.

So, perhaps there's a govenment subsidy involved?

looks good
its not for topend applications and stuff. but for students and ppl who never had a pc.this will be great! hope it comes to sa at about the same price for all school kids

Wouldn't mind one, would be nice to read morning news on it while on the bog

Perhaps there is wishful thinking... perhaps that's all they are relying on - much like the simputer.
