R499 DStv HD decoder unveiled

A silly question but will you be able to use/pair these decoders with a DSD1110 for xtraview or wont it work??

I assume you had to call their call centre? I am probably going to get roped in to upgrade my father-in-law's setup, just want to know what I'm letting myself in for.

Nope, did everything from my dstv self service profile. Just make sure you add the smartcard under your "Linked smartcards" section and then add the decoder. Will take a few minutes to activate

Quick question - does one need an 80cm dish definitely for HD? Or do Multichoice just try to cover all their bases by saying that?

Trying to find out if I will have guaranteed problems with a 60cm dish or not. Thinking of just getting the decoder for R499 seeing if it works with my current 60cm dish, if it doesn't work I'll take it back and get the R799 including install.

My HDPVR works just fine with a 60cm dish.... 80cm would be better to have, less rainfade and all that.

my reception on the new decoder is much lower than the HD PVR, the new hd decoder is getting 70% Signal Strength and 30% quality, borrowed an old HD PVR both were in the 90%s

Both my signal strength and quality with a 60cm dish and the SD decoder is 100% so I'll see how it goes. If it doesn't work will just take it back and get the install included.

Quick question:
I currently have the DSD 1132 decoder. Bought it including installation last year. I'm assuming it has a 60cm dish. It works great! Was looking at buying this new HD decoder. If I just swap decoders, will it work? I have an HDMI cable and an HD tv.

Thanks

Yes,just link the new Smartcard to your subscription and remove old one. Slightly more work if you have extraview though

We've got one of these new 4U decoders (have had it for about 8 months or so if memory serves). The first one refused to install its software updates (kept downloading over and over again) and the installer told us that that was a problem with about half of the decoders they sold. The second one now works, but recently developed problems with its baseband tuner or front-end. Several channels don't work (decoder complains that there's no signal) which is exactly the same symptom I've seen with other decoders that were busy dying (it's an issue with the RF electronics that handle the incoming baseband signal from the LNB).

Also, when you tune to the DMX channels, this decoder displays no track info.

So far the 4U looks not entry-level, but just cheap-and-shoddy to me...

I bought one of these at the beginning of the year to use as a backup when there is something I want to watch (read: our main decoder is used exclusively by wife and kid).

I hate it. It is so laggy - often several seconds pass between pressing a button and getting a result on the screen. I am tempted to sell the stupid thing but would probably only get R200 so may as well just keep it :-/

Flassh, you sure it isn't maybe an isolated case? I have two of those and don't really have an issue with the speeds (granted they're mostly used by the wife and kids).

Now, if you were talking about the Explora...There are days when I want to take a sledgehammer to the damn thing!

The software for dual view decoders is difficult to create and maintain, thats why DStv abandoned dual view decoders and went for the Xtra-view model.

You posted later in this thread that the MC forums had references to the old Dual PVRs being hard to upgrade and maintain, yet your first post responds to someone who wants a new technology Dual PVR. With newer technology, bigger hdds, faster processors and more memory, surely all these difficulties have become surmountable.
