R499 DStv HD decoder unveiled

What do you mean disabled??

Mines not slow. It's perfectly fine.

I've plugged it into my router. Just want to know why it has that connection.

For MultiChoice to upgrade the firmware and do diagnostics at the service centre.

nice and cheap, but still not worth the price looking at subscription fees for daily repeats

@Flash SA has it correct, the Ethernet port is not enabled for user use at all, as are the same ports on all the older decoders. It is only the Explora that allows a connection to the Internet .

A 4U and 4S (the "U" and the "S" indicate the manufacturer of the decoder) that responds slowly means either the decoder is faulty, or there is a problem with the incoming signal levels.

So it's to no use for us?

If I were able to use it for Showmax I would consider getting one.

For now my DSD1110 (for easyview) and Android device for Showmax will have to do.

The port is not disabled, just the features. If I connect it to my router and I go to settings then it shows its connected and enabled.

So disabled, no.

A subtle distinction but yes. Even the SD PVR will show connected and enabled when connected to a device. The SD PVR has what looks like a small air vent at the bottom of the decoder, which allows a daughter board to be inserted, after which the port does allow a few things such as log files to be downloaded, and software updates. I am pretty sure the other decoders will allow the same. But as far as user use, the port is to all intents and purposes disabled.
