The MEC for Housing promised the local informal settlement land before the last election. Including buying three nearby farms and dividing it into plots. Problem is - there are no nearby farms, just smallholdings and industrial land.
so they started protesting when nothing happened. It took a while to get it into their heads that Midvaal had nothing to do with it. And it didn't help that the RDP officials in the area were blatantly taking bribes to place people in the waiting list.
Something had to give.
Mashatile has tried to placate them, including offering them land 10 km north, near the Heineken Brewery. But the small group of protesters are demanding land, with water and sanitation, in their area. Rumour is they are thinking of bussing protesters up to Mashatile's private residence. The same rumours also said they were planning to dig a ditch across the highway.
