Rain 5G just keeps getting slower and slower...

Bit of an update on this, 9pm peak time speeds today (March) - 85Mbps down and a weak 25Mbps up. Speed has dropped by over 78% in just over 2 years.

Was I right or was I right ? It's like being on a sinking ship, at some point I'm going to have to switch which is flippen annoying.
Does your area have fibre? What I've noticed is that speeds increased slowly once a area gets fibre as everyone leaves one by one.

I have been experiencing a steady decline in my 5G - Standard package this year. This last weekend the average download speed was less than 1Mpbs! That is totally ridiculous. Lately i have had to reboot my router more and more often to get a better signal. But now it is just beyond frustrating. I have not been able to watch any live streaming (like the F1) because it is so slow, it freezes every few seconds. To make matters worse, if I use my cellphone, I waste my MTN data because the Rain internet drops consistently then my phone switches over to 4G MTN data. I have logged so many tickets with rain, but they do not seem to care about my issues.

January 2020 : 400Mbps
December 2020
: 300Mbps.
October 2021 : 125Mbps
March 2022 : 85Mbps

An update on this. I have now started experiencing quality dips when trying to stream high bitrate 4K content.

This speed when I'm 0.53km from the tower that I can literally see from my router ? With the same -78dBm router signal that used to be good for 300Mbps ?

This is unacceptable really. If it's not at least 100Mbps (which is only 50% of the previously-advertised 200Mbps!) in the weekend evenings before the end of the month I will probably be forced to move to fibre.

@rain_mobile Please get your technicians to look at the tower, I don't know if it's flooded or just over saturated but it's a joke.
You know the email address associated with my Rain Account already from the 4 April private message, thanks.

Hi @NR7
We will look into your query and provide an update.

Hi @NR7
We will look into your query and provide an update.

2.5 weeks later, still bad speeds at peak times when everyone streams and downloads in the evening.

You said you'd send a new router, still waiting. Don't bother with it, the speed is double when everyone in the suburb is sleeping or at work.
Clearly a tower issue. Sold too many packages and haven't upgraded the infrastructure.

Embarrassing, can't believe I used to get 6x this speed for the same R999.

Time to move on I think, R499 more for fibre that's 15x this speed sounds like a bargain.

Edit : So erratic. Now over 100Mbps download and 10Mbps upload. Too unpredictable, signal stats don't change but the speeds change depending on how people load the tower.

Well, This is what I get for 5G:

Tech is supposed to come check but they come to my house whilst i am at work, and when I make an appointment with them and take off work they do not even bother to pitch.

Rain techs are a joke, their prime qualification is looking at social media on their phones and cracking jokes.

My outdoor CPE was installed by me as they were unable to mount it against a flat wall nor could they neatly install a LAN cable through my roof, so I sent them on their merry way and did the installation myself.

Unfortunately contention is getting crazy. Even with LOS to the tower the buffering and throughput dropping to well under 1Mbps at times with packet loss.

time to look elsewhere

Please note I dont post these speeds lightly, I have been with Telkom mobile for almost 6 years. Its just gone from strength to strength. There were issues most of Gauteng dealt with for 3 weeks and it was resolved last week Thursday. Dont confuse Telkom and Telkom mobile. The below "contract" is month to month yes its not uncapped but for solid speeds of that and 2tb I think thats more than decent enough

Hi @NR7

Please provide me with your email via PM
We are also on the premium package and we are receiving 5mb speed with really really unstable ping. Really unacceptable and are going to fibre for this even though we don't want to wait for installation etc

HI @DartonStaker

Please provide me with your email via Private Message.
Like I said we are getting 5mbs speeds while still on the premium R1000pm package which is nonsense and thinking of getting fibre from Mweb to solve this issue. Why must I pay soo much when I can get 1000mb from Mweb for just a little more

So did you get the fibre line ?

Just do it.
I sucked up sh!tty service for 2 years - same story as 90% here - speeds keep falling, disconnects, no support through their official channels, sarcastic support staff.
Made the move to fiber - never looked back - no throttling, no issues downloading anything, no issues working from home (VPN), no issues connecting to my alarm system, kids no issues playing xbox or PC games - only regret is that I stuck with RAIN for 2 years and even then I have to thank them - as it was one of their support staff that pushed me over the edge when he told me " well if you not happy with this, just move ISP " - and I did - best advice I ever got :)

They cant compensate for what they are selling. at 1 million people they where fine. Now they saturating at 15 million to 25 million. Something has to give at some point.
