Rain 5G: My Experience & Network Setup

I was concerned when u saw NA for LTE then engendered you guess have the SA 5G unlike us (who use 4G for upload)

Decent speeds there given the signal.... I think signal could be better with repositioning or higher mounting

Interested to see how this plays out

Okay now got to crimp a long ethernet cable and do some tests tomorrow.

Hello Neighbour ;). Some good results there.

I'm about 1km away. Your upload hell of alot better than mine. Did you change any settings on the cpe?

One adjustment only. Fixed antenna mode 6. Cycled through all 10 and did a Speedtest. No difference to download speed but upload increased x3

Hey guys, activated Rain 5G on 21/07/20 (Grassy Park). Situated +-600m from tower according to Rain Optimizer.
CPE currently on desk next to window. I'm yet to do any outdoor tests. Setup is CPE <- Firewall <- Switch <- PC.
Initial test immediately after unboxing and directly connected was 180mb down / 8mb up. Firewall possibly bottle-necking, will confirm over the next 2 days. Below results are consistent at any time of day give or take 5mb.

You guys are so lucky.... SA 5G :D

We have NSA in Gauteng :(

Okay so unboxing and setup complete. Currently positioned inside. No time spent positioning yet. Just hooked up to LAN cable and then ran some tests.

Took a while to register on 5G. downloads look promising, uploads sucks b@lls.

Poor upload speed is a sign of poor signal. If you can mount it outside it should improve

:thumbsup:Will check that out. My upload is a bit disappointing. Little bit iof rain put me off doing some outdoor tests. Will check this afternoon.

Is there a difference? Not to clued up on that.

Also I tried searching as to how to interpret the signal strength and intensity. What should I be looking out for? Lower number?

Upload can be affected by the distance too hey. In your case NSA will help with upload because it uses 4G to help with upload speeds. Stand Alone 5G does not use 4G at all hence you see N/A on the LTE side. With the Frequencies that Rain own it's pretty much the same hey you just lose the 4G part.

NSA can be really nice because the Huawei CPEs can aggregate 5G and 4G making it's next level if there is enough spectrum but SA is also next level because it will have higher peak download speeds.

CPE outdoor test / not mounted as yet, 2m from the ground (top of a ladder), pointing same direction as best indoor results.

I had better signal quality indoors. *confused*.
Decent improvement in SI.

But these signal stats are better compared to your previous post.

Look at that upload speed

Am I awake, I'm still in this honeymoon phase...will the relationship hit a rocky road??? Time will tell...

Ey this is always a fear hey - ive had no issues in the last 3 months but everyday i wake up and wonder if today is the day...

Is mounting it outside an option for you? The internal speed is pretty sweet but 200Mbps extra outside might be worth investing in a mount

I'd wait on cancelling Telkom for at least 1 month - i am sure more people will join the network in CPT so give it a month or 2 - that is if its feasible

its a stretch but will see if I can hold out for month -this is 150 bucks more than my 10mbps adsl!

Yes. few options. I can mount it on a chimney on a single storey(not being used) or on top of a parapet on a double storey roof. or alongside the wall of the second storey. was thinking of mounting it on a dstv bracket with the clips/mount supplied.

Damn..that’s just .were you parking next to the tower??? :) I’ll relook my positioning and post back later the week.

Lol. Just on a plastic chair in the yard. Tried to make sure not pointing into wall or neighbours wall. Think the tower is at GP High.

So after the lightning speeds of yesterday I had to move the unit back inside near a window..

Also noticed the wifi signal is not great. If I move to another room not far away the wifi on my fone disconnects and switches to my asus router ssid (adsl). Both routers in the same area.

Is this is the same spot as the previous speed test? 100 vs 300 is quite a difference.

How are you finding it on the day to day aside from speed testing? Streaming? Zoom / Teams calls? General usage?

Same spot but I've found the device to be extremely sensitive to slight movements. So didnt really put it in exactly same spot. Speed varies as well.not in a stable range but I suppose settings and mounting spot can assist with that? See test now via wifi..

Streaming has been good. Page loads browser dependant. Haven't really had much online team meetings yet but will be doing more testing over coming weeks. Latency has also been up and down. Lows of around 9 or 10 but then mostly 20 to 30..
