Rain 5G: My Experience & Network Setup

Okay - so i spent the late afternoon setting up the CPE outside. I removed an old dish and repurposed the bracket. I am by no means a handyman or DIYer so have my fair share of battle scars in the form of scrapes and cuts. Had a few Jou Ma Se Po#$H moments when i struggled to feed the LAN cable through an existing hole and couldnt get it right. ended up drilling another and sat on the roof in the dark mounting the brackets. did not spend too much time aligning of testing router settings as the dew on the roof started making things a bit dodgy.

speeds about 350-450mbps down - 70-90 up. will mess around with settings in the week. my wifi is a bottle neck as getting 200-250mbps on my devices. not sure if its the router or devices. my latency is about 20ms - anything can do to improve this or is it just what it is?

Simply amazing!!!!

You are now basically uploading at a faster rate than most of us can download lol!!!

Lol thanks. I was rocking a 10/0.7 mbps adsl line two weeks ago so yeh. but im weary with RAINs reputation. so will see how long it lasts.

So after yesterdays install speeds this morning are similar over Ethernet. definite drop in speed over wifi. might need to bring forward my search for AP's and get one now in the meantime.

any suggestions of which model of the unifi range to go with that will enable real world speeds of at least 500 mbps (to future proof the install)?

Nothing new to report. router seems to be holding up well outside - no disconnects or issues in rainy weather.

i did see speeds drop to average 250-300mbps down. fiddled with CPE antennae settings and got it back to above 400mpbs. the weekend i will see if i can fine tune the alignment on the bracket.

Okay - So i got my fibre line installed - but i see that while my current adsl router supports dual wan - one of the connections has to be the dsl line. i cannot chose two ethernet connections as the WAN source. so for me to test loadbalancing between the 5g line and the fibre line i have to wait for when i get a new router.

how does loadbalancing inpact latency - in this case high/low latency... about 18ms for the 5g line vs 2ms for the fibre line.

You should be able to setup LB on the Mikrotik across all 3 connections - unfortunately limited to 100Mbps each for the hAP lite but that should be fine for the DSL and Fibre (Vuma reach if i recall?). When you get the 3011 you can then just port your config across and you will be covered for greater than 100Mbps

I haven't tested the impact to latency on my side as it (latency) isn't a huge issue (so far) - not much of a gamer and work Teams calls are fine even when both me and the wife are online at the same time

Thanks. I have cancelled the dsl service. I wanted to loadbalance the rain 5g with the vumareach.

Pity that the 5g is CGNAT and the vumareach you cannot access your router. So if I plug my router in behind that then will be double NAT.

But will test it with the mikrotik. Once I get it working will port configs. I'm looking at the RB4011.

They (Vuma) should really look at changing that policy - have 2 configs - 1 for those that want to mess around and 1 for those that want things default.

Correct

I hear you brother. It's such a frustrating thing. But does not look like it will change anytime soon. Essentially I cant even switch off wifi which will also create interference when I use APs etc. But that's for another discussion. Will report back once I mess around with the router.

So - my first 'issue' since I got the product - after loadshedding, the router is connecting and getting a signal and WAN IP but it says no internet? im connect directly to the CPE? any thoughts? Luckily i have the vumareach line now active that i can connect to lol.

A CPE reboot seems to have sorted it, albeit not as fast speeds as I usually get (250-275 vs 400 down), will see if its loadshedding related and keep an Eye on it.
Was going to say this sometime happens... I've had to power cycle mine as well after LS

I bought this from geewiz and I power it from a Ratel DC inverter - means the CPE stays on through LS

Which model Ratel do you have?

860p. Battery indicator is at 50% after 2hrs powering the Rain, Mikrotik, 1 Airties AP and a switch

I had to get that device because the Ratel only has 100Mbps POE and that device enbakes me to get Gigabit to tthe Rain CPE

Thanks for posting this. I was looking for a solution to power my 5g CPE during LS. Managed to score a Ratel 860p today from Sinetech. As fast as stock came in today, it just flew out. They said the 8100 stock is due end Sept. Now just need to buy this injector from Geewiz and I'm sorted.

Yeah those Ratels are like gold I tell you, if you don't pull the trigger as soon as stock is available they're gone

Had to power cycle again. i didnt have loadshedding. hope this doesnt become a constant thing.
