Rain and storm for Cpt

23mm in Dwarsberg/Jonkershoek - this time of the year, will take what one can get. Approx. 23mm still to go for this to be the best year in 5 years for this area - fingers X'ed. :-)
 
A moderate intensity frontal system will brush the SW-Cape coast on Wed 26th (Boxing Day). Some rain is expected (mostly at night), along with cooler temperatures (which may not be a bad thing!)

Edit: I know I predicted rain, but it is strange to wake up in the middle of the night in Cape Town in December to cold,wet and windy weather!

Edit #2: The SAEON Constantiaberg weather station recorded 5.5mm in the hour up to 2am, real rain (for a while).

With 22mm yesterday and approx. 18mm this morning, this has been Dwarsberg/Jonkershoek best year in the last 5 years, bloody marvellous! :-) disclaimer - this has been my own collection of data, so not official.

There is a difference between orographic rainfall, which mostly affects the top of mountains, and showery rain which falls everywhere. Apparently there are gauges at various elevations in the Jonkershoek Valley (below the summit of Dwarsberg), though these data are not in the public domain. It is difficult to correlate rainfall at a single point, with that in other stations, and in the catchment areas as a whole. Still, a good year!

Edit: 8mm in our gauge in Kenilworth yesterday, and 1.5mm this morning. Both welcome, but very different from Dwarsberg!

Pretty much the same as my data collection. Still a good indication of a good year for the CT area.
 
A powerful frontal low will brush the SW-Cape tomorrow (Fri 11th). This will bring moderate amounts of rain (10-20mm near the mountains), but very strong to gale-force winds along the coast.

24mm in Kenilworth between 4pm and 7pm. Gauge blew half-over in the wind, so not sure if its an accurate reading. A lot quieter now.

SAEON Dwarsberg (near Jonkershoek) recorded amazing amounts, close to 40mm in 3 hours:
4.6mm between 4pm and 5pm, 17.5mm between 5pm and 6pm, and 17.8mm between 6pm and 7pm.

Edit #2: Another 23.6mm on Dwarsberg between 7pm and 8pm. Over 60mm in 4 hours!?
Edit #3: Another 8.1mm on Dwarsberg between 8pm and 9pm. Over 70mm in 5 hours.
Edit #4: Another 5.8mm on Dwarsberg between 9pm and 10pm. Over 75mm in 6 hours.

Bru, it was awesome. If I stuck to the R44 on the way back I would have been bone dry, but I opted for the trails and coming down g-spot in the rain was bliss! Glad I got some rain on the bike. Slightly less impressed with the fact that I though I had my rainsuit with me, turns out it was just the jacket... Still a nice ride.

This today is just a gay spit. Not rain :) But I must say the wind was awesome, I was windsurfing sideways home on N2 @ 150km/h :ROFL:
