The center of the low pressure is currently close to Cape Town, and there is currently a lull in the rain, and the wind direction has become more fickle. Its not a direct hit on Cape Town, and not the strongest storm ever, but if you happen to be floating in a boat, it could be rather unpleasant. The winds on the other side of the low will be quite strong from the SW, and the onshore swell will lead to coastal flooding in some places overnight.

This storm will brush almost the entire southern Cape coast in the next two days. Give it time...

Still likely to be quite windy at 11pm this evening. The storm over CT is not really going to abate until later on Sat 22nd.

After a lull of about 2 hours, another front near the center of the low made landfall just after 7pm. This brought further strong winds, and more rain. The temperature is also starting to drop, as colder air is pulled into the system.



Edit: At 7.30pm CT airport reported a wind speed of 37kts gusting to 52kts (68km/h gusting to 96km/h).

Quite blustery here in Kenilworth. The wind direction is changing to westerly, and these changing conditions are associated with different levels of turbulence near the mountain.

Aviation forecasts for CT are rapidly updating, since a change to a cross-wind direction makes a big difference (only north-south runway available).

Dammit, the wind last night in Gardens, but on the plus side, we had a decent bit of rain. When it gets lighter will walk to Deer Park, the streams should be running nicely

I have been monitoring Jonkershoek for the past year. This has been the best 2 consecutive days so far:
21JUN19 - 57.66mm
22JUN19 - 100mm+ (yet we are still over 200mm behind JUN18 monthly total)

On the positive side, Jonkershoek hit the 1000mm YTD this morning

Hoping there is uplift in the big 6 on Monday!

The wind abated in CT just after midnight, but the rain seemed to continue on and off during the early hours of this morning (Sat 22nd). There was a total of 21mm in our gauge in Kenilworth up to 8am. Not a lot, but certainly welcome!

Rainfall in the Overberg has been more substantial than CT itself, as the Dwarsberg (Jonkershoek) figures posted by @air suggest. That's pretty much it as far as the rain is concerned for this system, though strong winds will occur along the southern and Eastern Cape coast during the day, as the surface low moves eastwards.

There should be some snow over the highest peaks in the SW-Cape, though temperatures have been surprisingly mild so far.

Seems my original prediction was quite accurate. Very short lived, very little rain, lots of cold weather.
The AAO index dropped sharply but then promptly turned a round and went up again. Rain restricted to the southern coast only.
Very poor June month so far generally.
