Rain and storm for Cpt

Some periods of heavy downpours on and off here near Fish Hoek, rain not as continuous as expected with partially sunny breaks in between and then clouding over suddenly, weather likely to continue right through today into tomorrow morning ..
 
Not much in terms of downpours in helderberg. There was a brief period where it rained, rather than drizzled, but nothing near the predicted levels.
 
YR.no have been fairly reliable and I understand that predicting weather is not an exact science but lately they have been way off. They predicted heavy rain for last week Saturday. I cancelled everything we had planned as a result only to wake up to birds chirping and the sun shining with blue skies.

With 3 days of rain predicted - do you think this will have the impact we want on the dams ?

The majority of the rain today was orographic (caused by mountain uplift). Up to midday I recorded 60mm in Kenilworth, while my cousin's gauge in Rondebosch recorded 23mm (during exactly the same period). Wind direction is key, as the rain tends to drift down after passing over high ground.

Forecasts tend to use an average for a large area, and do not properly take such terrain differences into account. I can promise you that the Helderberg mountain received a lot more rain than you did near sea level.

I don't know what you 'want' or expect? The dams do what they do, collect rainfall and runoff.

YR is rubbish. In summer their temp predictions are hopelessly too low e.g. telling you it's going to be 20 degrees on a 35 degree day, and in winter their temp predictions are hopelessly too high. Their rain predictions are also all over the place.

Winter is not over but exactly 1 year ago winter was not over either. The total 12 month loss is currently at 21.6%. That is massive, and the fact that we are relying more and more on rainfall to prevent day0 during an age where we know it is getting drastically less. Desalination plants should have been built and new water connections and development should be halted. Now they will build CBD 2 instead of investing in water security, maybe it seems like I am anxious but maybe we all should be. It is happening in PE and that is a much smaller population.
 
I see they have already started with restricting heavy users again so that is good, but ultimately more water is needed, but this DA only uses the stick to manage usage instead of investing in adding additional supply. They are actively promoting development while also punishing water usage, that is bad governance.

That is what I would call still load shedding. They preload the hydro scheme but as soon as LS is on for a few days that becomes less and when stage 3 hits, when it is really needed, there is no difference. I would not call that saying FO to Eskom or call that good governance by the DA. They maintained the schemes yes, but then completely failed to make the Cape less dependent on Eskom.
 
More heavy rain expected overnight until 9ish... let's hope it materialises.
Rain has abated some while ago down South... been a fair amount though throughout today.
