What's up with the "smoggy" skies since yesterday .... almost like there is smoke hanging. Al the way from Hermanus right to Roberson
A broad upper trough earlier in the week brought offshore flow, berg winds, and sub-tropical air from central Africa, where vegetation burning is common. This is very different from the blue skies Cape Town normally experiences for most of the year, when clear air blows in from the South Atlantic Ocean.
The trough was most easily visualised on yesterday's ship synoptic chart, with winds blowing anti-clockwise around the high pressure centered over Southern Africa:

Unfortunately for us, the smokey sky is making it more of a cheese moon..

Yup was pretty disappointing. By the time it managed to shine through or over the smoke/smog layer it was just another full/almost full moon, too high in the sky to be that dramatic.
Of course, another side effect benefit of all that smoke in the air was it helped lower the temperatures somewhat, which meant we were not subjected to another day of high temperatures normally associated with the low-pressure trough and bergwinds.

According to the South African Weather Service, these record-breaking temperatures were the result of strong offshore (northerly to northeasterly winds) conditions along the west coast of South Africa associated with a surface trough off the western part of the country and a dominating high pressure

The heavy rain and snow predicted for today (Mon 4th) has not materialised, but there will still be some rain and light snow overnight (into Tues 5th), as another cold-front brushes the SW-Cape:

Thanks for the confirmation, but I am not surprised (see above).
Below 20C daytime temperatures for the foreseeable future. Long-range forecasts show more snow on Mon 11th! Will update closer to the time...

My **** today was cold. Hit a maximum of 15c on my outside thermometer just after 2pm.
I'm so over winter. Bring on summer.
