Rain and storm for Cpt

Another significant pair of cold-fronts will reach the SW-Cape, starting overnight on Sat 9th, and lingering into Mon 11th. Cold, wet and windy conditions will be experienced over the western parts of the Northern Cape, and parts of the southern and Eastern Cape. Snow will fall at relatively low elevations over many mountain ranges:

Last night's cold-front brought strong winds and some rain to CT, but is only a precursor to a much broader one expected to make landfall this afternoon (Sun 10th). This will bring moderate amounts of rain (more close to the mountains), but widespread cold and wet conditions. Snow will fall at unusually low elevations (including a dusting on Table Mountain), and spread across much of the western and southern half of the country tomorrow (Mon 11th). The snow outlook has been consistent since the previous post on Thursday, but now extends into southern Lesotho and KZN on Tues 12th:

No man @Gordon_R, time to start spreading some good news, when is Spring coming? :)
I'm not quick to moan about the weather, but jeez, we've now had Winter since the beginning of May!

Highest include Paarl 36mm, Atlantis 24mm, Jonkershoek 23mm, Kirstenbosch 21mm, etc.

15mm in our gauge in Kenilworth (11:45am).

Edit: SAEON Dwarsberg reported 37mm up to midnight, and more than that so far today.

I agree this has been the longest and most miserable winter in living memory. Wed 13th should reach 20C, but the rest of the week looks worse...

Checking in from the Winelands area...been coming down in waves and the wind is not playing either..

Nope. Can remember previous winters when we lived in Blouberg and had to cycle to school in Milnerton being just like this. Maybe our age makes us think this is worse. What is clear though is that we have had a very long spell of pretty mild winters in SA for about 10-15 years.

Spring is around the corner. Back in CPT mid week after being away 7 weeks. Last time I returned in June there had been 6 prior weeks of rain and then it cleared up beautifully for a month from my exact day of return. Hopefully the same again!

lol ... been a perfect weekend in Port Alfred with not a cloud in the sky. Even a whale cavorting 200m from the beach today - quite spectacular.
 
Just saw a flash of lightning and thunder in the distance (2:45am). This is produced by upper instability as the cold-core trough moves overhead (not from surface heating in summer storms). Light hail is possible at ground level, in addition to the predicted snow over the mountains.

Edit: SAEON Dwarsberg reported 60mm up to midnight, but mostly dry since then.

Edit: The temperature at 8am on Dwarsberg was 0.1C, which means the freezing level was down to 1200m, and widespread snow is likely at that elevation.
