Rain and storm for Cpt

I wasn't expecting too much rain this morning, but we just had a brief deluge in Kenilworth (6:45am). Another cold-front is predicted for tomorrow (Fri 15th), with more rain and cold conditions, and light snow over the mountains.

Edit: 27mm in our gauge at 8:30am. Bit of a gap now.

It’s incredible how much rain we’ve had this year, will it break any records?

Thats funny because our downpour was at 7:45. Just as I was dropping the kid off at school

Probably not. We have had plenty of wet winters. This one has been unusual due to the prolonged duration, not necessarily the cumulative amount of rain. In addition the amount that fell in the catchment areas was not necessarily related to that in low-lying regions.

There are various sources of data available, but there are significant gaps, and the SAWS does not release the official numbers as a database. CSAG at UCT are trying their best, but still cannot present a complete set. What exactly are you looking for, or trying to evaluate?

Typical reference:
Unfortunately, Observatory March 2023 data were not provided by the South African Weather Service (SAWS) in their preliminary monthly bulletin. This station has records dating back to 1841! The South African Environmental Observation Network (SAEON) Dwarsberg station in Jonkershoek, the wettest reporting station in South Africa at the heart of the Cape Town dam catchment, also has a lot of missing data for the month, but at least 300mm fell here during March 2023.

Weather friend just sent me #1 and #3 WA videos (above) from Gordon's Bay. Says he has never seen anything like it.

Edit: Apparently along the southern Cape coast as well. Herold's Bay, George.

The SAWS ship synoptic chart shows a deep low (956hPa) offshore, with a span of isobars pointed towards the Cape:

Took a stroll along the coast at Onrus today and the sea was wild.
