Due to low soil moisture content in summer, any rain between November and April produces minimal inflow into dams around CT, and is easily offset by evaporation from heat and winds.

AFAIK only rainwater collection tanks benefit, since the runoff from a hard surface is almost immediate, and there is a short path to the collection point.

Edit: Rainfall around CT varies significantly by location, and on Fri 9th ranged from zero to 10mm+ (Strand was highest). 70l from 70m^2 roof is about 1mm rain...

Rather disappointing storms overall last night. Several isolated flashes of lightning, but never for long, and very limited precipitation.

Slightly better prospects for this afternoon, but don't expect too much.
 
The low pressure extending down from the north is very unusually, a narrow band down the west coast. But the long term for east models do not reflect any significant rainfall prospects for the next 8 to 10 days or so.

I look at the models every day, but seriously I don't expect any significant rainfall for the W-Cape until late-April or May. These storms are just amusing stuff to keep us distracted until then...

Absolutely no offence to Geoff.D, but I find his 'forecasts' highly inaccurate. There is more consistency and accurate info from Gordon_R.
 
I am looking just an ordinary oke, not a weatherman. Gordon is our resident expert on this thread. I don't try and be accurate but look at it from a long term perspective, and I am pretty accurate regarding when to expect the next possible events. Gordon gives us the accurate detail.

Yes. It is just a distraction at the moment, but still entertaining. It is interesting though to go through the models available in the public domain and see how each interprets the data and comes up with all sorts of predictions.
As an example, one model showed the chance of substantial rain for CT, this weekend, contrary to all of the others. Today that model now shows no rain for the weekend...

3.45pm: Very large anvil moving towards Cape Town, skies beginning to get very dark. SAWS CT radar confirms powerful storm front 50km to NW (offshore). Likely to arrive between 4.30-5pm. Expect fireworks!
