Haha that's our factory staff social. You don't want to party with them. Office staff have our socials at our building down the road.

The traffic dept seriously fncked up the flow of traffic this morning when they closed the turnoff to Grand West, Epping. (due to building flooded) ... but people that need to get to Thornton and Pinelands uses that same turnoff and now had to continue straight and find alternative routes. ... completely stupid thinking.

Yeah this affected me too. Had loads of 18 wheelers driving down Sipres Avenue. I had to drive to the top of Thornton (by the KFC) and get onto Viking there. Thankfully only added 10 mins extra to my drive.

Literally got lost trying to find the site I was supposed to visit at, I'm a Vallie after all and I follow the GPS, up until I saw this gigantic puddle and noped out of there, and ended up driving right the way around epping, (and still getting lost) ,

other places here in CPT seem to have even bigger floods or road closures, this place is insane with the amount of water in 1 week,
/note to self, learn swimming, looks like I'm going to need it!

Anyone have a reputable source for current road closures? Trying to ascertain whether the Franschhoek pass and/or Helshoogte Road will be open this weekend. Hoping to go do some snow chasing in Mont Rochelle but don't want to drive all the way out there, only to find the road is closed.

google maps keeps warning me winter storm road closures, but noticed it just highlights certain roads as impassible, like that road in Epping
maybe that might work for you?

I respectfully disagree. Wind speeds during the last few days have been within the normal range. What has changed have been human factors:
1. Increased population and urban sprawl.
2. Deterorating building quality and maintenance.
3. Social media, where every story becomes a drama.

I have lived in the same area(s) of Cape Town for 60 years, and recall vicious winters when I was at school in the 1970s.

Agree with all three your points, and unfortunately the catastrophising on social media is magnified by climate hysteria. Every weather fluctuation is now the end of the planet as we know it.

and they did drain that puddle, but since I was so worried about getting stuck again, decided to click alternative route. and go a different direction,

y'all weird if this is standard winter weather here in CPT, hate to see what summer is like, or maybe I'll feel more at home then.

It's standard. I spent a good few years building high rise structures in the CBD and this time of year was always difficult. About 20 years ago for example, building the office block at the CTICC on Heerengracht, the wind lifted quite a few scaffolding boards from the 10th/11th floor type area (which were tied down with wire) and rained them onto the off ramp at Nelson Mandela Boulevard.

This is not standard.

You have to be prep'ed for weeks of dizzle.

Summer is great, just have to accept some wind. If its not windy you die.

The DWS site shows that the Theewaterskloof Dam rose by another 6% yesterday to 91% this morning (Fri 12th) up from 68% on Mon 8th. The inflow has been absolutely astonishing, and shows few signs of abating. It seems quite likely that the dam will overflow before the end of July.

The outflow from the Berg River Dam has halved overnight, and the risk of flooding seems to have diminished.

In winter it can rain for days on end and there will be no flooding, just depends on how much water falls. (and where it falls)

Floods like this have happened maybe 3 times since I moved here 14 years ago.

It's bad, but in Stellenbosch we've had worse. There's been years where my whole yard just turns into a mud bath, and this year it's still okayish. The last two days has been mid to be honest, in Stellenbosch at least. But yeah, the weekend isn't done yet so let me rather keep my comments for next week.

I'd defer to @Gordon_R here as he seems to have the data at his fingertips, but I'd venture a guess that this week's rain does not even register as a blip in the record of high rainfalls for the metropole and Winelands in the longer term. I'm sure we've had 10 black South-Easters worse than this. We had some pretty big storms in the Boland in the 80's.

As mentioned, increased population and bad drainage management makes this look a lot worse than it is. Keep paving over everything and the water can't go anywhere.

The numerous mudslides we're having are also not just because of rain. We've just come out of one of our worst fire seasons where most of the fires were due to arson. These mountain sides are destabilised, and the resulting mud slides are making it look a lot worse that it normally would.

So annoying that they closed the schools on thursday, there was no storm our side and we have just had 3 weeks of school holiday.

Not having power for 33 hours just made it feel like the pandemic again.
